Niq Mhlongo returns with a collection of short stories that cover the span of our democracy: crime, xenophobia, racism and homophobia, the new black elite, land redistribution, the Zuma presidency. The stories have been published to critical acclaim in France, Germany, Spain, Italy and the USA but remain largely unknown in South Africa. Affluenza offers us a chance to savour Niq Mhlongo's take on the madness of the last twenty years.

Niq Mhlongo was born in 1973 in Soweto. He has a BA from the University of the Witwatersrand, with majors in African Literature and Political Studies. His first novel, Dog Eat Dog, was published by Kwela in 2004 and was translated into Spanish under the title Perro Come Perro in 2006. This Spanish edition was awarded the Mar de Letras prize.

Besides writing novels and short stories, Niq has written a screenplay for the animated children's TV series Magic Cellar and scripts for a comic magazine called Mshana, the first issue of which appeared in February 2007. After Tears is his second novel.

Marico Moon is a collection of 60 stories by the well-known, much-loved Herman Charles Bosman. Almost all of the Oom Schalk Lourens classics are included; also some less well known, but equally brilliant and amusing stories.

The 'problem' with many Bosman stories is that, as previously published, they use language that is today considered by many to be unacceptably offensive. For this reason, Bosman has been in serious danger of being sidelined by all except diehard fans.

In a quest to overcome this difficulty, the publisher experimented with minor editorial adjustments and omissions, and concluded that Bosman can be presented in ways that faithfully present his storytelling brilliance without giving any offence. The result is Marico Moon: 60 stories with minimal editing, retaining the integrity of the original text.

These Bosman stories represent a superbly eclectic collection, with no consciously unifying factor other than that they inspire readers to smile, laugh, think, wonder or wander. The stories in Marico Moon are 60 excellent reasons why Lionel Abrahams referred to Bosman as 'a South African literary genius'.

If the apricot trees of Soweto could talk, what stories would they tell? This short story collection provides an imaginative answer as it captures the vibrancy of the township and surrounds. Told with satirical flair, life and death intertwine in these tales where funerals and the ancestors feature strongly; where cemeteries are places to show off a new car and catch up on gossip.

This collection of short stories, written by the Somali author Ahmed Ismail Yusuf, takes the reader into the heart of the Somali caste system.
The stories are deceptively simple. It combines folk tales with everyday events - boys and girls who develop crushes, boys who play soccer and girls who adore poetry… Yet, underneath these storylines lies a web of inter- and intratextual references that combine seemingly haphazard narratives into a tightly-knit unity.
The first story is of a boy who has to face up to wild animals in order to protect his family's goats and sheep. Then the scene changes: We are transported into the heart of the ongoing caste system in Somalia and we experience first-hand how people conduct themselves worse than any predator ever would, for the ills in Somali society gave way to a civil war that to this day has not been resolved. The stories remain personal, though: A mother tries to save her twin boys on the eve of Somalia's collapsed state; a newlywed woman tries to save her sister from being raped by soldiers…
Yet, despite the horrors, the author finds beauty in simple, everyday moments. Boys and girls still fall in love. A teacher who has endured a shameful legacy of her outcast heritage encourages a young scholar to understand Somali poetry.
Ahmed Yusuf does not shy away from tragedy, instead he explores both the human limits of endurance and the human limits of love.
Somali folklore flows freely in and out of the fibres of these stories.
In the last story a boy, who flees from the civil war, befriends a lion. Not only does it complete the story cycle, it yet again draws on an old folktale.
Ahmed Ismail Yusuf simple narratives belie the fact that he is a masterful storyteller. This book is a must for all those who have appreciated Arundhati Roy's novel The ministry of utmost happiness.

From a carcass competition in the Karoo to a shambolic murder trial in Cape Town, William Dicey's essays freewheel across an open terrain of interests. Dicey is curious and inventive, weaving strands of essay, journalism, fiction and self-reportage into something uniquely his own. Mongrel investigates a range of topics - radical environmentalism, the fault lines between farmer and farm worker, the joys and sorrows of reading - yet drifts of concern and sensibility draw the collection together. Several essays touch on how books can move, and sometimes maul, their readers. Mongrel is idiosyncratic, witty, potent.

Fasten your seatbelts for an anthology of turbulent tales curated by Stephen King and Bev Vincent. This exciting new collection, perfect for airport or aeroplane reading, includes an original introduction and story notes for each story by Stephen King, and brand new stories from Stephen King and Joe Hill.

Stephen King hates to fly.

Now he and co-editor Bev Vincent would like to share this fear of flying with you.

Welcome to Flight or Fright, an anthology about all the things that can go horribly wrong when you're suspended six miles in the air, hurtling through space at more than 500 mph and sealed up in a metal tube (like - gulp! - a coffin) with hundreds of strangers. All the ways your trip into the friendly skies can turn into a nightmare, including some we'll bet you've never thought of before... but now you will the next time you walk down the jetway and place your fate in the hands of a total stranger.

Featuring brand new stories by Joe Hill and Stephen King, as well as fourteen classic tales and one poem from the likes of Richard Matheson, Ray Bradbury, Roald Dahl, Dan Simmons, and many others, Flight or Fright is, as King says, 'ideal airplane reading, especially on stormy descents... Even if you are safe on the ground, you might want to buckle up nice and tight.'

Book a flight for this terrifying new anthology that will have you thinking twice about how you want to reach your final destination.
