For as long as Zoe can remember she has loved welcoming friends & family into her home, whether it's to celebrate someone else's big day or just being with friends, there is nothing she enjoys more than putting her energy into making any occasion special. In Zoe's eyes the best thing about getting people together is there really is no right or wrong way: maybe you want to plan a throw-everything- at-it shindig, or simply make a special effort for one guest. Mostly it's about how people feel when they're in your company. How the smallest of gatherings can feel momentous, and the biggest of parties can feel intimate. Zoe shares her best and never seen before ideas in print.

Based on one of the most successful paranormal podcasts ever, with over 10 million streams and downloads to date, Unexplained consists of ten chapters focussing on a different paranormal event, from Australia to Germany, the UK to Zimbabwe, using the stories as gateways to a journey beyond the veil of the uncanny, exploring what they reveal of the human experience. Taking ideas once thought of as supernatural or paranormal and questioning whether radical ideas in science might provide a new but equally extraordinary explanation, Unexplained is The Examined Life meets The X Files.

While it is human nature to shy away from things that are outside of our comfort zone, it is only by spending time in our discomfort zone that we can grow, and improve, and realise our full potential. Whether it's putting yourself forward for a new challenge, asking for difficult feedback, nailing a presentation or getting a dream job, in this book Farrah Storr shows how you have to push through what she calls 'brief moments of discomfort' in order to get to where you need to be. Farrah describes these brief moments of discomfort as 'like HIIT training for your life' - and shows how the more you force yourself into them, the easier it will get.

The Writers celebrates 48* unsung genius female writers from throughout history and across the world, including the Girl Stunt Reporters, who went undercover to write exposés on the ills of 1890s America; Aemilia Lanyer, the contemporary of Shakespeare whose polemical re-writing of The Bible's Passion Story is regarded as one of the earliest feminist works of literature; and Sarojini Naidu, the freedom fighter and 'Nightingale of India' whose poetry echoed her political desire for Indian independence. Including writers from across a wide spectrum of disciplines including poets, journalists, novelists, essayists and diarists, this is an alternative gynocentric history of literature that will surprise, empower, and leave you with a reading list a mile long.

Handwriting is something of a dying art nowadays, as we tap messages to each other day after day. But handwriting analysis can divulge everything from a person's timidity to their ambition, from their desire to please to their need to control. In fact, so revealing is your writing that in Japan all CVs are still written by hand. This book will show you how to judge someone's handwriting and how to examine it in detail. Because every aspect of penmanship - the height of an 'h', the curliness of a 'g', the pressure of the pen on the paper - is a collection of signals that we are giving out without meaning to. The way we write can tell the world a huge amount; sometimes more than the things we write about.

We like to think of ourselves as exceptional beings, but are we really any more special than other animals? Humans are the slightest of twigs on a single family tree that encompasses four billion years, a lot of twists and turns, and a billion species. All of those organisms are rooted in a single origin, with a common code that underwrites our existence. This paradox - that our biology is indistinct from all life, yet we consider ourselves to be special - lies at the heart of who we are. Adam Rutherford explores how many of the things once considered to be exclusively human are not. Evolution has, however, allowed us to develop our culture to a level of complexity that outstrips any other observed in nature.

This book reveals a long-lost treasure trove of silent cinema. At the same time as Hollywood was starting, a film industry in Southern Africa was surging ahead in production, distribution and exhibition.

Films made in African studios and locations brought in experienced technicians and actors from New York and London, as well as employing many Africans - whose talents were remarked upon in overseas reviews.

Nearly sixty movies are reconstructed with illustrations, plot synopses and quotations from reviews - including the precursor of the 1960s movie Zulu, the original King Solomon's Mines and The Blue Lagoon, with pioneer African film stars A.Z. Goba and Msoga Mwana as the black revolutionary in Prester John.

Neil Parsons was professor of history at the University of Botswana and has taught and researched at universities in Zambia, Swaziland, South Africa, the UK, the USA, Canada, Australia and the Netherlands. He is the author of King Khama, Emperor Joe and the Great White Queen, and, with Alois Mlambo, A History of Southern Africa.

'A history which has long needed to be told. It throws new light on developments in film production during the Great War period and immediately after.'
Kevin Brownlow

'A splendid addition to the burgeoning literature on colonial cinema and Black world cultural studies.'
Nwachukwu Frank Ukadike

'Neil Parsons's reputation as a sharp-eyed analyst of Central and Southern Africa is based on his enviable knack of finding neglected topics and then fashioning them into works that simply light up cultural history everywhere.'

In June 2017, just steps from Trump Tower in midtown Manhattan, The Daily Show with Trevor Noah opened The Donald J. Trump Presidential Twitter Library, a 4,000-square-foot museum space that gave the 45th president and his amazing Twitter legacy the respect they deserve. In the single weekend it was open to the public, the Library pop-up drew 7,500 visitors and had to turn away countless others. But the Presidential Twitter Library experience should not be limited to the elite coastal few. Not fair! All citizens, even the Mexican ones, should have the chance to see Donald Trump's tweets in their rightful context - organized and commented on in the fearless, hilarious, insightful voice of The Daily Show. This one-of-a-kind exhibition catalogue presents the Library's complete contents.

The Colour of Time spans more than a hundred years of world history from the reign of Queen Victoria and the US Civil War to the Cuban Missile Crisis and beginning of the Space Age. It charts the rise and fall of empires, the achievements of science, industry and the arts, the tragedies of war and the politics of peace, and the lives of men and women who made history. The book is a collaboration between a gifted Brazilian artist and a leading British historian. Marina Amaral has created 200 stunning images, using contemporary photographs as the basis for her full-colour digital renditions. Dan Jones has written a narrative that anchors each image in its context, and weaves them into a vivid account of the world that we live in today.

Based on the series produced for the BBC World Service Who thought up paper money? How did the contraceptive pill change the face of the legal profession? Why was the horse collar as important for human progress as the steam engine? How did the humble spreadsheet turn the world of finance upside-down? The world economy defies comprehension. A continuously-changing system of immense complexity, it offers over ten billion distinct products and services, doubles in size every fifteen years, and links almost every one of the planet's seven billion people. It delivers astonishing luxury to hundreds of millions. It also leaves hundreds of millions behind, puts tremendous strains on the ecosystem, and has an alarming habit of stalling. Nobody is in charge of it. Indeed, no individual understands more than a fraction of what's going on. How can we make sense of this bewildering system on which our lives depend? From the tally-stick to Bitcoin, the canal lock to the jumbo jet, each invention in Tim Harford's fascinating new book has its own curious, surprising and memorable story, a vignette against a grand backdrop. Step by step, readers will start to understand where we are, how we got here, and where we might be going next. Hidden connections will be laid bare: how the barcode undermined family corner shops; why the gramophone widened inequality; how barbed wire shaped America. We'll meet the characters who developed some of these inventions, profited from them, or were ruined by them. We'll trace the economic principles that help to explain their transformative effects. And we'll ask what lessons we can learn to make wise use of future inventions, in a world where the pace of innovation will only accelerate.

Basic mathematics for economics students - Theory and applications
Economic theories can be expressed in words, numbers, graphs and symbols. The existing traditional economics textbooks cover all four methods, but the general focus is often more on writing about the theory and methods, with few practical examples.
With an increasing number of universities having introduced mathematical economics at undergraduate level, Basic mathematics
for economics students aims to fill this gap in the field.

Basic mathematics for economics students begins with a comprehensive chapter on basic mathematical concepts and methods (suitable for self-study, revision or tutorial purposes) to ensure that students have the necessary foundation. The book is written in an accessible style and is extremely practical. Numerous mathematical economics examples and exercises are provided as well as fully worked solutions using numbers, graphs and symbols.

Contents include the following:
• Linear and non-linear mathematics
• Keynesian model of the economy
• Differential calculus
• Matrices
• Basic mathematics of finance
• Partial differential calculus
• Integral calculus
• Linear programming

Basic mathematics for economics students is aimed at all economics students. It focuses on quantitative aspects and especially complements the three highly popular theoretical economics textbooks, Understanding microeconomics, Understanding macroe- conomics and Economics for South African students, all written by Philip Mohr and published by Van Schaik Publishers.

It is the late 1980s. Serious allegations surface against three prominent National Party cabinet ministers, one of them the second-most powerful man in the land. They are, it is said, regularly abusing young boys on an island just off the coast of Port Elizabeth.
From opposite ends of South Africa, a brave cop and a driven journalist investigate. Mark Minnie and Chris Steyn independently uncover evidence of a dark secret. But the case only surfaces briefly before it disappears completely.
Thirty years later, the two finally connect the dots to expose this shocking story of criminality, cover-ups and official complicity in the rape and possible murder of children, most of them vulnerable and black.

ABOUT THE AUTHORS
MARK MINNIE is a former cop who worked as a Narcotics Bureau officer for the South African Police during the 1980s. He left South Africa for England in 2007, and acquired a CELTA qualification for teaching English as a foreign language through Cambridge University in London. Shortly thereafter he began working as an English examiner for Cambridge University and the British Council in China. Tragically, Mark was found dead on Tuesday 14 August 2018 (1 week after the release of the book) in Port Elizabeth.

CHRIS STEYN is a writer and former journalist. Over the years she has worked for the Rand Daily Mail, The Star and the Cape Times. In 1986 she went into exile to avoid imprisonment for refusing to testify against a source. When she returned to South Africa, she was arrested and tried for protesting against an apartheid government proclamation that drastically curtailed press freedom. Chris later became editor of the investigative unit of the Independent Newspapers group. She is the proud co-owner of a bookshop in the seaside village she now calls home.
