Achieve better marks in Afrikaans (Grade 7-12)
Afrikaans+ is a learner-friendly guidebook which caters for additional language learners who want to achieve better marks in Afrikaans. This practical guide contains explanations in English and is filled to the brim with examples. It explains tests and exams used for both the DBE and IEB and was written by a panel of educational experts who understand the needs of additional language learners.
This book is completely up to date. The Afrikaanse Woordelys en Spelreëls (AWS) has just been re-issued, blindsiding many a teacher with the changes in Afrikaans grammar rules. While the AWS is seen as the touchstone for Afrikaans language practitioners, it could be a daunting book to use in the classroom. Afrikaans+ was written with the most recent changes to the AWS in mind, and presents these grammar rules in a clear, practical manner.
Every chapter in the book also offers free online support - exercises, answers and examples - which will be kept up to date by the panel.
The book contains six sections:
1. Comprehension - Begrip: This explains how you should approach a comprehension test, how to look for the answers, and provides tips on how to understand the questions. It also explains how to make summaries. Visual texts, such as cartoons, graphs and maps, are also explained.
2. Grammar - Taal: This is a step-by-step guide to understanding the “how” and the “why” of Afrikaans grammar. You will be guided with English explanations and Afrikaans examples on things like word order, tenses, adjectives, adverbs, time, numbers, plural and diminutive forms, the negative, active and passive voice, pronouns, participles and abbreviations. There are sections offering basic knowledge to help the struggling learner through the exam. But there are also more advanced sections for the learner who wants to get an A and for the teacher who wants to become familiar with all the changes in the AWS.
3. Literature - Letterkunde: Everything you need to know about prose, drama, short stories and poetry. What is the difference between a metaphor and a simile? Who is the protagonist and who the antagonist? We use simple explanations and good examples of all these and other literature terms.
4. Oral - Mondeling: The book contains practical pointers on how to prepare for different kinds of oral, such as interviews, prepared speeches, introducing and thanking a speaker, roleplay, how to make a vlog and how to discuss the booklist you have to read for grade 12. Examples of all these are given, and more are provided online.
5. Vocabulary - Woordeskat: You will always need vocabulary for essays and orals. With the most recent vocabulary on food, technology, life after school, sport and lots more, you will be well prepared.
6. Written work - Skryfwerk: This section starts with a step-by-step approach to writing: how to choose a topic, how to do your planning, what not to use in an essay and how to end your story. The examples of all the different types of written work (essays, long and short transactional writing) and tips on each, will help you to master each one. Online you will be able to read through more examples.

In today's multicultural and inclusive classrooms, educators are faced with more challenges than ever before. Besides being interpreters and implementers of the curriculum, teachers need to understand curriculum design, curriculum approaches and models, legislation and prescribed policies. Curriculum studies in context offer sound, detailed and practical direction with reference to the CAPS, to help teachers to enhance teaching, learning and assessment.
Curriculum studies in context narrow the gap between the curriculum plan, instructional design and teaching practice. The views of Tyler, Stenhouse, Freire and various ubuntu theorists serve as a theoretical grounding for a deeper understanding of the teacher's role as interpreter of the curriculum. Reference is made to the influence of contextual aspects, decolonisation, Africanisation and curriculum innovation.

Every young South African needs quality schooling, and well-trained, capable and confident teachers are very important in imparting knowledge, values and skills to their learners. Teachers, therefore, need to execute fundamental and challenging tasks in and outside the classroom, meet the diverse needs of South African learners in the 21st century and continually enhance their professional development, performance and competence in the workplace. In Didactics: the art and science of teaching, practical guidance is provided for both the experienced and student-teacher on how to teach effectively in the challenging South African education system, ultimately to contribute to diverse and quality education. Didactics: the art and science of teaching are aimed at all prospective and practising teachers who need to acquaint themselves with the basic competency requirements for effective and quality teaching in any South African classroom. Dr Thelma de Jager is a senior lecturer and chairperson of the Teaching and Learning and Research Committees in her department at the Tshwane University of Technology. She teaches Didactics (how to teach) and trains student teachers on how to teach effectively. She has presented and published papers nationally and internationally in accredited and peer-reviewed journals and at conferences. She has received 'Lecturer of the Year' (Faculty: Humanities) and 'Woman Researcher of the Year' awards several times and was also selected to participate in the National Teaching and Learning Awards of higher education. Arts education is regarded as an essential part of quality education which not only enhances learners' social, personal and intellectual development but also their critical and creative thinking skills. It provides learners with opportunities to work collaboratively with each other and in so doing, to develop respect for others' opinions and backgrounds. It is also a healthy outlet for emotions and ideas that learners may not otherwise be able to express. Creative arts education provides guidelines on how to teach dance, drama, visual arts and music in a more animated, vibrant and practical manner so as to allow each child to reach his full potential. Based on the grades 7-9 curricula, Creative arts education provides examples and activities to enable creative arts teachers to put theory into practice. Besides sections for each art form, a full chapter is devoted to inclusive education, learning barriers and how best to accommodate the different learning styles and needs of a diverse class of learners. Structural guidance according to CAPS requirements is also included. Creative arts education is aimed at all prospective and practising grades 7-9 teachers of visual arts, dance, music and drama.

Life Orientation in the Senior and Further Education and Training phases (called Life Skills in the Intermediate Phase) is a compulsory school subject. The purpose of this subject is to empower learners to achieve their full physical, intellectual, personal, emotional and social potential. It is thus obvious that it is a crucial subject to develop and support learners to become fully functional individuals and responsible citizens of a democratic society, able to cope with life and all the challenges it presents. Life Orientation for South African teachers is a comprehensive textbook on the subject of Life Orientation as stated in the curriculum policy documents.

Life Orientation for South African teachers provides educators with in-depth knowledge as well as teaching skills to deal with the wide variety of themes within the subject. Besides a theoretical foundation, there are case studies, reflective questions and activity boxes to assist with a practical application of the topics covered in each chapter.

Voices of this land is a new and expanded edition of what has become one of the standard collections of South African poetry written in English. It includes poems ranging from the colonial period right up to the present and encourages readers to revel in the power, richness and diversity of South African poetry. Poetry has to do something more than reproduce power struggles and their justifications in arbitrarily shortened lines, using obscure language, garnished with imagery. Rather, poetry should use language to reproduce and deepen the senses and emotions as well as the consciousness and ideas that are an inseparable part of experience.

Both in and outside the classroom, a teacher always requires sound communication skills. In an instructional context, a clear and expressive voice is the primary mode of communication, and the teacher is most often the initiator of any written or spoken message. When the message is not conveyed effectively, misunderstandings, misconceptions and even situations of conflict often arise. South African classrooms have become increasingly diverse and this has complicated communication in the classroom. Many teachers are faced with the challenge of facilitating learning in a language generally not spoken by their learners as a home language. A policy of additive multi- or bilingualism is therefore encouraged, and as teachers, we need to encourage learners to value their own mother tongue as well as those spoken by others. If teachers have even a limited knowledge of at least one other language spoken by their learners, it goes a long way towards facilitating understanding and better learning. Communication, culture and the multilingual classroom equips the prospective teacher with these necessary communication and classroom literacies. It provides a useful and enriching guide for interacting with many different people at many different levels in the learning environment. Additional resources include useful tips and information on learning and using new words and phrases from different languages, including units that focus specifically on Afrikaans, Northern Sotho, Tswana, Zulu and Xhosa.
