Education has been dramatically reformed worldwide over the last few decades. In this age of globalisation, student teachers, education students and scholars of the social sciences, in general, need to take careful note of these changes. Comparative education - education systems and contemporary issues contain separate chapters in which a selection of education systems - South Africa, Botswana, the United States, Australia and India, as well as the emerging education dispensation of the European Union - are discussed. The other chapters of the title deal with issues in education - values and ideologies in education, cultural diversity, gender issues, higher education, curricular reform and violence in schools. The title commences with an outline of the historical evolution of comparative education and its significance.

One cannot imagine a world stripped of social interaction. Our lives are intimately linked to those of others and we need to establish ground rules to regulate our interactions. These rules are rooted in values, morals and fundamental rights; they are the beacons according to which we navigate our lives. But these ground rules are not cast in stone. Our contemporary world is characterised by the constant change that seems to engulf every aspect of our lives. All around us we see social systems crumbling as moral decay and disrespect for ethics set in. These disruptive changes compel us to reflect on values and human rights and the ground rules that anchor our lives and the community we serve. Hence, we are confronted with the question: how do we recreate morality and ethical behaviour to ensure that human rights are more than word in the Constitution? This book explores human issues in a quest to understand values, morals and human rights. It aims to help all of us - but especially students and teachers - develop an understanding of this complex world in which we must rediscover, redefine and reinvent values and human rights in order to build our fragile democracy. Only through rediscovery and understanding can we help learners and our social institutions develop a well-articulated approach to values and human rights in education. In the final analysis, it is not so much about teaching and learning values and human rights, as it is about living values and human rights and allowing them space to grow in society.

In building a more democratic society and an equitable and quality education system, South Africa has embraced the implementation of inclusive education in which the needs of all learners must be accommodated. This move has placed increasing pressure on teachers to adapt their instruction, the curriculum and the classroom environment to increase learner involvement and to minimise the exclusion of those children who experience barriers to learning. Against this backdrop, Learner support in a diverse classroom provides a good balance between the theoretical knowledge needed to understand what takes place when a child learns, and the hands-on provision of assessment and support for the learner. Structured according to the SIAS (Screening - Identification - Assessment - Support) document, which underpins learner support in the South African classroom, this important resource offers both creative solutions and solid foundations to any teacher wishing to bring out the best from all their learners.

Arts education is regarded as an essential part of quality education which not only enhances learners' social, personal and intellectual development but also their critical and creative thinking skills. It provides learners with opportunities to work collaboratively with each other and in so doing, to develop respect for others' opinions and backgrounds. It is also a healthy outlet for emotions and ideas that learners may not otherwise be able to express. Creative arts education provides guidelines on how to teach dance, drama, visual arts and music in a more animated, vibrant and practical manner so as to allow each child to reach his full potential. Based on the grades 7-9 curricula, Creative arts education provides examples and activities to enable creative arts teachers to put theory into practice. Besides sections for each art form, a full chapter is devoted to inclusive education, learning barriers and how best to accommodate the different learning styles and needs of a diverse class of learners. Structural guidance according to CAPS requirements is also included. Creative arts education is aimed at all prospective and practising grades 7-9 teachers of visual arts, dance, music and drama.

Achieve better marks in Afrikaans (Grade 7-12)
Afrikaans+ is a learner-friendly guidebook which caters for additional language learners who want to achieve better marks in Afrikaans. This practical guide contains explanations in English and is filled to the brim with examples. It explains tests and exams used for both the DBE and IEB and was written by a panel of educational experts who understand the needs of additional language learners.
This book is completely up to date. The Afrikaanse Woordelys en Spelreëls (AWS) has just been re-issued, blindsiding many a teacher with the changes in Afrikaans grammar rules. While the AWS is seen as the touchstone for Afrikaans language practitioners, it could be a daunting book to use in the classroom. Afrikaans+ was written with the most recent changes to the AWS in mind, and presents these grammar rules in a clear, practical manner.
Every chapter in the book also offers free online support - exercises, answers and examples - which will be kept up to date by the panel.
The book contains six sections:
1. Comprehension - Begrip: This explains how you should approach a comprehension test, how to look for the answers, and provides tips on how to understand the questions. It also explains how to make summaries. Visual texts, such as cartoons, graphs and maps, are also explained.
2. Grammar - Taal: This is a step-by-step guide to understanding the “how” and the “why” of Afrikaans grammar. You will be guided with English explanations and Afrikaans examples on things like word order, tenses, adjectives, adverbs, time, numbers, plural and diminutive forms, the negative, active and passive voice, pronouns, participles and abbreviations. There are sections offering basic knowledge to help the struggling learner through the exam. But there are also more advanced sections for the learner who wants to get an A and for the teacher who wants to become familiar with all the changes in the AWS.
3. Literature - Letterkunde: Everything you need to know about prose, drama, short stories and poetry. What is the difference between a metaphor and a simile? Who is the protagonist and who the antagonist? We use simple explanations and good examples of all these and other literature terms.
4. Oral - Mondeling: The book contains practical pointers on how to prepare for different kinds of oral, such as interviews, prepared speeches, introducing and thanking a speaker, roleplay, how to make a vlog and how to discuss the booklist you have to read for grade 12. Examples of all these are given, and more are provided online.
5. Vocabulary - Woordeskat: You will always need vocabulary for essays and orals. With the most recent vocabulary on food, technology, life after school, sport and lots more, you will be well prepared.
6. Written work - Skryfwerk: This section starts with a step-by-step approach to writing: how to choose a topic, how to do your planning, what not to use in an essay and how to end your story. The examples of all the different types of written work (essays, long and short transactional writing) and tips on each, will help you to master each one. Online you will be able to read through more examples.
