The book is aimed at art and mosaic lovers and mosaic crafters.

A full colour, coffee table art book containing over 400 photographs of magnificent, inspirational mosaics.

192 pages
210 x 250 mm landscape
Mosaic is the art of creating beautiful patterns, images and motifs with the help of colourful tiles, glass pieces and stones to create decorative works for interior and exterior living spaces.

While the popularity of this centuries-old art form has waxed and waned over time, it has proved eternal and, with time, has become ever more polished and beautiful. Mosaics Made in Africa is a 192 page, 210x250mm, hardcover, full colour, coffee table book containing over 400 photograph.

It is a tribute to the exceptional mosaic work of Vera Valli Giovitto, and her beloved Mosaic Arts. These pages recount her journey from humble beginnings and a lifetime dedicated to the art of mosaic craftsmanship in South Africa, showcasing highlights of her life's work.

The book pays tribute to the dedicated team of artisans and designers at Mosaic Arts whose collaborative skills are an indispensable part of the works presented. With each new mosaic commission, their collection has grown to embody a diverse cross-section of styles reflecting the unique backdrop of the people and places they were made for. Although many of the mosaics are not accessible to the public, together they form a body of work that is truly inspiring and deserving of a broader platform of appreciation.

Marina Giovitto Ehlers, the author, is the Director of Mosaic Arts, a mother of three and a qualified Architect. She has worked with her mother for 20 years, from whom she learned the practice, art and love for mosaic. In 2011 she won the CEO Magazine award for the Most Influential Business Woman in Art & Culture.

Hidden Johannesburg

R 395
R 316Jy spaar R 79
Johannesburg: Egoli to some, Jozi to others. Once a mining town, now the most important commercial city in Africa. It's been home to renegades and rogues, colonialists and capitalists, the dispossessed and the newly enriched. Today it's populated by those who call themselves Africans or Afrikaners, by blacks, whites and every shade inbetween, and by immigrants from all over.

There are suburbs where the daily rituals of Jewish culture rival New York's; elsewhere, the tone is more Lagos than laid-back. Remnants of the colonial era stand alongside contemporary steel and glass. In a town that prides itself on the pursuit of fortune, it's a challenge to preserve heritage, and it is against this background that Hidden Johannesburg offers a snapshot of 28 notable buildings.

From the stately mansions of the Randlords to their downtown headquarters, the clubs where they socialised and the churches where they worshipped, the architecture of early Johannesburg lives on in sandstone, granite, marble and slate. But this is a city that constantly reinvents itself, and where the old is all-too-readily demolished to make way for the next 'big thing'. Some buildings will survive, others will be consigned to memory.

Hidden Johannesburg reveals fragments of the history of this vibrant city but, perhaps, the book also tells us something about our future, for if we allow our heritage to be swept away in the name of progress, are we advancing at all?

South African Artists at Home

R 375
R 300Jy spaar R 75
An artist's canvas reflects the face he chooses to show to the world, but the place in which that art is made is seldom revealed. Paul Duncan was given unparalleled access into the homes and lives of fifteen of South Africa's most revered artists. Over countless mugs of coffee or glasses of wine, he listened and observed as they spoke about their lives, loves and the way they make their art. South African Artists at Home takes the reader into some very private spaces, affording us a glimpse of what the artist goes home to at the end of the day. For some, the work space and home space are irrevocably intertwined. For others, home is a sanctuary. Or perhaps it is the studio that is the sanctuary and home is where 'real life' happens. Either way, if you have an interest in art, artists, and the often bizarre way that making art intersects with living life, you'll find this book intriguing.

Dylan Lewis - An Untamed Force

R 350
R 280Jy spaar R 70
The towering sculptures of Dylan Lewis are becoming well-known landmarks in South Africa, where they grace botanical gardens, golf courses, grand hotel foyers and the halls of discerning collectors. Increasingly, they are being snapped up by galleries and institutions abroad.

This publication builds on an earlier book, bringing the photographic record of Dylan Lewis' work up to date. The brief introductory text reveals how the sculptor's boyhood in a happily bohemian, nature-loving and creative family inspired him, and traces his artistic development from what have come to be known as 'the cat years' to his current, more esoteric and mythical approach.

This beautifully presented book showcases some of Lewis' most ambitious and successful works in a series of dramatic photographs, and includes images of preliminary sketches and working methods.

Listening to Distant Thunder

R 390
R 312Jy spaar R 78
The Art of Peter Clarke was originally published by the Standard Bank as part of a curated exhibition in May 2011. This prestigious volume celebrates the life and works of Peter Clarke (1929-2014), one of South Africa's foremost artists. A mere 500 copies of the book were originally published, all taken up at the exhibition, and continued demand has led to its re-release.
Clarke left his job as a dockworker in Simon's Town to devote himself to art. The wisdom of this decision is reflected in a remarkable career, which extended over some six decades and was acknowledged in the awards of the Order of Ikhamanga (silver) in 2005 and a Lifetime Achievement Award in 2010. Listening to distant thunder: The art of Peter Clarke, recounts an artist's life in the context of the social history of South Africa from the 1940s onwards. His images reflect the social disruption of the Cape Flats, and the trauma of his community's forced removal from Simon's Town to the bleak apartheid township of Ocean View. Yet Clarke's images have avoided bitterness, and his work is a perceptive scrutiny and celebration of life in all its aspects. Illustrated with over 200 reproductions and photographs, this book was researched and written by well-known South African art historians Philippa Hobbs and Elizabeth Rankin, in close collaboration with the artist, over almost seven years.

A Cape Camera

R 295
R 236Jy spaar R 59
Arthur Elliott was thirty years of age and of no settled profession when in 1900 he was given a quarter-plate camera as a present. Soon the main interest of this adventurous self-made American was recording the historic landmarks in Cape Town and its surroundings, with an unfailing eye for the essential that no photographer trying to capture the atmosphere of the old Cape has ever been able to equal.

The Elliott collection is one of the most remarkable photographic collections in the world. The qualities that make Elliot's photographs of old Cape scenes so memorable have something to do with the way the sunlight strikes the irregularity of the white plastered walls; with the way Elliott introduced the human element into his photographs; but mostly with the way his camera conveyed that delicate balance between picturesque dilapidation and unselfconscious prosperity that used to characterise Cape domestic architecture.

Elliott's rare rapport with his subject is complemented by a knowledgeable and affectionate commentary from a noted expert and enthusiast on the subject of South Africa's artistic and cultural heritage, Hans Fransen.

Incredible Tretchikoff

Vladimir Tretchikoff lived a life as colourful as his paintings. Incredible Tretchikoff chronicles the life of this flamboyant artist from his humble beginnings in Harbin, China, as the son of Russian émigrés to his highly successful exhibitions in the Carlton Centre in Johannesburg and in major cities in America and Britain.
As a young cartoonist he faced deceit in Shanghai and life-threatening situations in a besieged Singapore during World War II. He was nearly killed when the boat he tried to escape on was sunk by the Japanese. Shortly after he was taken prisoner of war in Java and forced to use his artistic skills for Japanese propaganda.

Tretchikoff was reunited with his wife and daughter in Cape Town four years later. It was sheer ambition and willpower that drove him to start a new life here as an artist and to defy the dismissive local art establishment. Within years he was crowned one of the country's bestselling and most popular artists. That was partly due to his business acumen and flair.

While he became a pop icon in the 1980s he never accepted the title as the King of Kitsch. Recent years have seen a new appreciation for his art with his painting Red Jacket selling for over R4,7 million in October 2012.
