This new anthology of Afrikaans poems accompanied by their English translations is an extended and revised edition of Afrikaans Poems with English Translations, edited by A.P. Grové and C.J.D. Harvey and originally published in 1962. Grové and Harvey's anthology gained a certain prominence in its time on which this anthology aims to build. It will also be a continuation of a specific tradition in Afrikaans literature, namely to collate the best and at the same time the most representative poems in an anthology. The aim with this edition was to produce a concise and compact anthology of a hundred of the best poems in Afrikaans; as a result of the near impossibility of such a task the editors ended up including a hundred and thirteen poems.
This selection will provide the reader with a window on Afrikaans poetry and give some impression of the vibrancy of Afrikaans literature as a whole: it is a literature thematically and structurally grounded in Africa, but at the same time in a variety of international literatures and poetic traditions.

The poems in Book of Mercy brim with praise, despair, anger, doubt and trust. Speaking from the heart of the modern world, yet in tones that resonate with an older devotional tradition, these verses give voice to our deepest, most powerful intuitions.

Internationally celebrated for his writing and his music, Leonard Cohen is revered as one of the greatest writers, performers, and most consistently daring artists of the last hundred years.

In one of the most anticipated debut collections of recent years, Maneo Mohale reckons boldly with the experience of - and the reconstruction of a life after - a sexual assault.
Mohale's unapologetic and disarming voice carries through a budding and blooming garden of poetics, rooted in a contemporary southern African tradition, but springing forth in queer and radical new directions. Indeed, this is a work encompassing the full, often contradictory, and seldom complete process of healing: where relations must be chosen as well as made; where time becomes non-linear and language insufficient; where nothing is what it seems, yet everything is what it is.

"In Rustum Kozain's new collection, Groundwork, this leading South African poet raises his own bar way above ordinary expectations.
Kozain has intentionally retained connections with his early work while simultaneously introducing a group of poems that indicate the promise of work still to come. His voice has strengthened and has a new confidence making the poems (paradoxically) lighter without losing their characteristic trademark seriousness. This is a thoughtful, pitch-perfect collection that resonates with the reader long after the last poem is read.
His 2005 debut collection This Carting Life was widely acclaimed for its gravitas and vigour. With poems such as 'Kingdom of rain' and 'Talking jazz' Kozain firmly established himself as a brilliant new poet in the South African constellation. Several of his poems have been anthologized and, most importantly, read and discussed. Kozain won both the Ingrid Jonker Prize (2006) and the Olive Schreiner Prize (2007) for This Carting Life.

'He is a poet to watch, to read and enjoy.' Gus Ferguson"

The conventions inherent in the ancient Japanese art of writing haiku, are embedded in its seventeen syllables spread over three lines. They display a poet's imaginative wit and dexterity. Haiku capture what Gerard Manley Hopkins calls the 'inscape,' or essence of a moment in nature.

These African haiku illustrate the power of poetry to appeal to the sensory and the cerebral. African philosophical traditions accept that the experience of wonder, reflected here, is the originating source of philosophy. In this new collection of haiku, Botswanan-born Anthea Pretorius, captures a variety of precious, but provocatively sombre insights into lived life at the tip of Africa. This collaboration of Japanese word art and African wisdom will keep you spellbound.

AVBOB launched the 2018 Poetry Project and the results were incredible!
Poets submitted words of loss and consolation in all 11 mother tongues. Editors in all languages were carefully selected to curate the collection of poems entered, and they too were transformed by the process. This is a poetry portal for all South Africans - a cathartic space where amateur and accomplished poets can use their craft to comfort others. There are also some of South Africa's most well-known and awarded poets who also contributed, Antjie Krog and Danie Marais among others.

in a burning sea: Contemporary Afrikaans Poetry in Translation aims to address a long-standing need to introduce Afrikaans poetry to a local as well as international audience. While a number of translated works have, in recent years, been made available to the wider South African readership, only a handful of high-profile individuals continue to enjoy international recognition. This anthology is a collection of poems from contemporary poets who are actively writing and publishing and whose work is a good reflection of the current trends evident in Afrikaans literature. The editor hopes it will go some way towards remedying the present lack of exposure and encourage future publications offering translations of writing also representative of the broader traditions of historical and twentieth-century Afrikaans poetry.
In compiling the anthology, the editor approached poets who had published at least a second volume of poetry in the years from 2005 to 2011. Some poems were unpublished at the time of the selections but have found a subsequent home in more recent volumes of poems. Individuals were asked to submit up to ten poems; some offered their own translations, but for the remainder she made use of a panel of excellent English translators. In each case the poet worked in close collaboration with the translator of his or her choice.

Dubbed the South African Sylvia Plath due to the intensity of her work and the tragic course of her turbulent life, Ingrid Jonker is one of the most iconic figures in Afrikaans literature. Posthumously awarded the Order of Ikhamanga by the South African government for 'her excellent contribution to literature and a commitment to the struggle for human rights and democracy in South Africa', the advanced ideas inherent in Ingrid Jonker's poems have made her a recognised literary figure internationally, with her poems being studied, translated and published in many languages.

Lady Anne (1989) is one of Krog's most acclaimed poetry collections. In an attempt to make sense of her own existence, Krog compares her own life in the midst of a world of racial injustice to that of the life and times of Lady Anne Barnard, of Scottish descent, during her stay in the Cape Colony in the late eighteenth century. Gradually the two voices intertwine and merge, highlighting the complexity of marriage but ultimately also that of a colonial legacy - still relevant 28 years later.

Are you in the mood?
I am.
Let's put the kids down.
Have a light dinner.
Shower.
Maybe not drink so much.
And do that thing I would rather do with you than with anyone else.
Lie in bed and look at our iPhones.

Written with brilliant wit, sharp observation and a big dose of reality, Love Poems for Married People takes the poetic form, turns it upside down and leaves it in the dishwasher to dry.

Including such gems as Why Are You in The Shower With Me?, Our Love is Tested in Traffic and What Time Should We Leave for the Airport? John Kenney's poems are packed with funny, wry observations about the reality of life once the initial shine of a relationship has dulled. From parental gripes to dwindling sex lives; from less-than-romantic gifts to irritating personal habits, it's all covered.
