About 50km outside of Cape Town lies the beautiful town of Stellenbosch, nestled against vineyards and blue mountains that stretch to the sky. Here reside some of South Africa's wealthiest individuals: all male, all Afrikaans - and all stinking rich. Johann Rupert, Jannie Mouton, Markus Jooste and Christo Weise, to name a few.

Julius Malema refers to them scathingly as 'The Stellenbosch Mafia', the very worst example of white monopoly capital. But who really are these mega-wealthy individuals, and what influence do they exert not only on Stellenbosch but more broadly on South African society?

Author Pieter du Toit begins by exploring the roots of Stellenbosch, one of the wealthiest towns in South Africa and arguably the cradle of Afrikanerdom. This is the birthplace of apartheid leaders, intellectuals, newspaper empires and more. He then closely examines this 'club' of billionaires. Who are they and, crucially, how are they connected? What network of boardroom membership, alliances and family connections exist?

Who are the 'old guard' and who are the 'inkommers', and what about the youngsters desperate to make their mark? He looks at the collapse of Steinhoff: what went wrong, and whether there are other companies at risk of a similar fate. He examines the control these men have over cultural life, including pulling the strings in South Africa rugby.

This memoir is the extraordinary story of how one woman, Masih Alinejad, an awe-inspiring journalist and activist from a small village in Iran, overcame enormous adversity to fight for what she truly believed and founded a major movement for women around the world with the simple removal of her hijab.

It all started with a single photo, a bold statement on Masih's Facebook page: a woman standing proudly, her face bare, her beautiful, curly hair blowing in the wind. Her crime: simply removing her veil, or hijab, which is compulsory for women in Iran. This is the photo that sparked a social-media liberation movement, 'My Stealthy Freedom'. Across Iran, women started posting pictures of their uncovered hair on Masih's page in open defiance of the strict religious beliefs of their country (and often, their families) while sharing their personal stories about this powerful mode of expression.

With the creation of 'My Stealthy Freedom' Masih has gained over one million supporters around the world, and inspired Islamic women everywhere to take a stand for their basic human rights. She's been covered by the media from Vogue, to the Guardian, the New York Times and beyond. Last year she was the recipient of the Women's Rights Award from the Geneva Summit for Human Rights and Democracy.

But behind the scenes of this movement, Masih has been fighting a painful personal battle. She is a divorcee -- a sin equivalent to prostitution in Iranian culture. As a reporter, Masih has been actively speaking out against the government's corrupt policies for more than a decade, and has faced abuse and slander at every turn. In 2009 she went abroad during the Iranian presidential election with hopes of interviewing Barack Obama. Before the interview could take place, the elections were stolen, Masih's newspaper was shut down, and thousands of Iranians were arrested. She was expelled from her own country, and separated from her only son. Although she eventually was able to take her son abroad, she has not returned to Iran or seen her family in years. To this day, Masih has faith that one day she will be reunited with her homeland.

A defiant, inspiring voice for women's rights, Masih Alinejad speaks for women everywhere.

'Intriguing and inspiring . . . her voice is so important to the Iranian people's struggles for freedom and democracy' Azar Nafisi, author of Reading Lolita in Tehran

Fasten your seatbelts for an anthology of turbulent tales curated by Stephen King and Bev Vincent. This exciting new collection, perfect for airport or aeroplane reading, includes an original introduction and story notes for each story by Stephen King, and brand new stories from Stephen King and Joe Hill.

Stephen King hates to fly.

Now he and co-editor Bev Vincent would like to share this fear of flying with you.

Welcome to Flight or Fright, an anthology about all the things that can go horribly wrong when you're suspended six miles in the air, hurtling through space at more than 500 mph and sealed up in a metal tube (like - gulp! - a coffin) with hundreds of strangers. Featuring brand new stories by Joe Hill and Stephen King, as well as fourteen classic tales and one poem from the likes of Richard Matheson, Ray Bradbury, Roald Dahl, Dan Simmons, and many others, Flight or Fright is, as King says, 'ideal airplane reading, especially on stormy descents... Rye Mallett, a fearless 'freight dog' pilot charged with flying cargo to far-flung locations, is often rough-spoken and soft of regulations.

But he does have a rock-solid reputation: he will fly in the foulest weather, day or night and deliver the goods. So when Rye is asked the fly into a completely fogbound northern Georgia town and deliver a mysterious black box to a Dr Lambert, he doesn't ask questions.

As Rye's plane nears the isolated landing strip, worse trouble than bad weather awaits him. He is greeted first by a sabotage attempt that causes him to crash land; and then by Dr Brynn O'Neal, who claims she was sent for the box in Dr Lambert's stead. Rye finds himself irresistibly drawn to the intrigue surrounding his cargo . . . and to the mysterious and alluring Brynn.

Soon Rye and Brynn are in a treacherous forty-eight-house race to deliver the box. With everyone from law enforcement officials to hired thugs hot on their heels, they must learn to trust each other so they can protect their valuable cargo from those who would kill for it.

This book is a romance of truth; but behind it is a greater personal romance, and behind that again is the even more wonderful romance of South Africa.
- Jan Smuts
No Outspan begins with Deneys Reitz's return from the First World War, during which he commanded a Scottish regiment. One might think that Reitz would be happy to settle for a quiet life after fighting through two terrible wars, but nothing could be further from the truth. Immediately on his return by ship to Table Bay Harbour, he agreed to stand as a Member of Parliament in the forthcoming election.
The South African Party under Botha and Smuts won the election, and Deneys Reitz became a Cabinet Minister. This enabled him to lead a life of great adventure when not constrained by Parliament or the drudgery of Pretorian office duties.
No Outspan is a fascinating account of life in South Africa from the early 1920s until the early 1940s, when the author was Deputy Prime Minister of South Africa. Deneys Reitz played an important role in the creation of the Kruger National Park and was appointed as one of the founding trustees despite being an opposition Member of Parliament at the time. His involvement with wild life and various game reserves he helped establish while in office is a theme that runs throughout the book.
An intensely interesting episode in the book is the fall of Hertzog as leader of a coalition government over the issue of South Africa's stand in the Second World War. As a Cabinet Minister in the coalition government, Deneys Reitz had a front row seat in all of this - and he tells the story as no one else could.
Jan Smuts said after Reitz's death in 1944: 'His loss is a national one and will be mourned all over this country which he knew and loved as no other'.

It was a dark and stormy night in 1991 when a magician took over the bridge of the Oceanos, an ageing passenger liner travelling up the Wild Coast. The captain was nowhere to be found.

The ship started taking in water in the auxiliary engine room just a few hours after it had set sail from East London. Panicking, the crew scrambled into the lifeboats, leaving passengers largely to fend for themselves.

The ship's entertainment staff bravely started to calm passengers and coordinated the abandon-ship operation and rescue effort. Lifeboats were launched in waves of several metres high and mothers with children and the elderly were given first priority. When they ran out of useable lifeboats 230 passengers and junior crew were left stranded on board the listing and rapidly sinking ship.

The South African Air Force then launched their biggest air rescue ever, with helicopter crews and Navy divers risking everything to evacuate the remaining passengers. One by one the passengers were airlifted off the ship - one of the first was Captain Yiannis Avranas, who was universally condemned for his lack of leadership. Eventually all 571 people on board were rescued in what to date remains one of the greatest maritime rescues in South African history. The story of this dramatic rescue, which made headlines across the world, is told from the perspective of all the key role players and describes their extraordinary heroism.
It also explains how the investigation into the loss.

The last night, I fall asleep believing we have thousands of days ahead of us. We don't. This night is our last night.
One evening, Carolina says good night to her partner, Aksel. Things have been tough for both of them recently, especially with an eight-month-old son to raise. So when Aksel dies unexpectedly in the night, Carolina's world is turned upside down.
Based on the author's own experiences, Let's Hope for the Best details the small moments of life before and after tragedy. It's a story about motherhood, family and the difficulties of loving someone who is distant, and then who is gone.
Brave and unsparing, packed with emotion and humanity, it is about how the life we envisage for ourselves can be altered in an instant. What if one moment changed everything you've ever known?
