Award-winning cellist Sheku made history when his debut album, 'Inspiration', reached #11 in the Official UK Album Charts, and he was one of 2018's biggest breakthrough artists across any genre. He has garnered huge critical acclaim for his performances with The Times describing him as “the world's new favourite cellist.”

Now he is back with Elgar, a new album of works anchored around Elgar's Cello Concerto - arguably the best-known work in the classical canon written for solo cello, which saw the 100th anniversary of its first performance this year. Armed with the inspiration of the 1965 recording by his heroine Jacqueline du Pré, Sheku recorded the concerto at the world-famous Abbey Road Studios in an illustrious collaboration with Sir Simon Rattle and The London Symphony Orchestra.

Sheku's innate artistry and thoughtful approach to performing this iconic work are immortalised in this new recording, where nine exquisite pieces, some popular and some less well-known, which provide a musical context to the Cello Concerto. He explains: “All the pieces are connected, either exercising similar emotions to the Cello Concerto, or written around the same time.” They include a new arrangement of Elgar's 'Nimrod', Klengel's 'Hymnus' which was composed for 12 cellos, and Sheku's own arrangement of beloved folk tune 'Blow the Wind Southerly.'

Sheku has been on a whirlwind adventure since winning BBC Young Musician 2016 - performing at TRH the Duke and Duchess of Sussex's wedding, playing at the BAFTAs, partnering with design icon Paul Smith, and winning two Classical BRIT Awards. He is currently an undergraduate student at the Royal Academy of Music.

Edgar Moreau performs two cello concertos which bravely and wittily challenge convention. Offenbach's ambitious Grand Concerto in G major culminates in military fireworks, while Friedrich Gulda's Concerto for Cello, Wind Orchestra and Band - written 130 years later - is a dazzling stylistic kaleidoscope. Moreau is joined by conductor Raphaël Merlin and the dynamic orchestral collective Les Forces Majeures.

Cellist Gautier Capuçon is the constant presence in this programme of music by Robert Schumann. In the Cello Concerto his partners are Bernard Haitink and the Chamber Orchestra of Europe, and in a selection of chamber works his violinist brother Renaud and the pianist Martha Argerich. “Bernard Haitink is a wonderfully inspiring guide,” says Gautier, “and Martha Argerich carries me along on the composer's waves of romanticism and passion.”

Sony Classical is proud to announce the release of Yo-Yo Ma's new album Six Evolutions - Bach Cello Suites, his third and final recording of these works. Bach and his Cellos Suites entered Yo-Yo Ma's life when he was four, when he learned the first measure of the Prélude to Suite No. 1 under his father's instruction. Ma has never lost his initial fascination.

“Bach's Cello Suites have been my constant musical companions,” Ma writes of the music. “For almost six decades, they have given me sustenance, comfort and joy during times of stress, celebration and loss. What power does this music possess that even today, after three hundred years, it continues to help us navigate through troubled times?”

Ma is more convinced than ever of the suites' ability to create shared meaning that extends far beyond the here and now. The suites' collective vision - at once divergent and coherent, empathic and objective - reminds us of all that connects us despite an increasingly discordant public conversation.

The August release of Six Evolutions also signals the beginning of a two-year, six-continent journey in which Yo-Yo Ma will devote himself to Bach's music, playing all six Cello Suites in a single setting in familiar and unlikely locations.

Six Evolutions - Bach: Cello Suites will not only offer an essential encapsulation of what this music means now to one of the world's most celebrated artists, it begins a new chapter in the cellist's 58-year relationship with this music.

The two-time ECHO Klassik winner Nuria Rial is not only one of the most important sopranos of early music, but has thrilled with her velvet and expressive voice also with compositions of the 20th and 21st century. For this recording she has teamed up with the 8 cellists of the Sinfonieorchester Basel.

At the center: Astor Piazzolla's famous cycle “Las Cuatro Estaciones Portenas” (The Four Seasons of the Port, meaning that of Buenos Aires), but also one of Heitor Villa-Lobos' Bach homages “Bachianas Brasileiras”, where the recorded elegiac No. 5 belongs to the most popular compositions of the Brazilian. From the Catalan home of Nuria Rial there is the legendary folk song “El Cant dels ocells” (The song of the birds). Legendary, as cellist Pablo Casals always ended his concerts with this song in exile (after the Spanish Civil War in 1936).

Another highlight is the world premiere recording of “Vocal Ice”, an impressive work by Spanish composer Bernat Vivancos.

Aurelien Pascal (cello), Nareh Arghamanyan (piano)
Münchener Kammerorchester, Howard Griffiths

The stunning new album from Howard Griffiths and the Munich Chamber Orchestra. Compositions by Franz Danzi, Mozart's contemporary, acclaimed composer of early classical music. The Cello Concerto in E minor is performed by young French cello virtuoso Aurélien Pascal. The Paris musician, born in 1994, began his musical education at the Paris Conservatory and took masterclasses with János Starker. The second soloist on this album is Armenian pianist Nareh Arghamanyan, who won the famous Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow sensationally at just 19 years old and at the young age of 15, was admitted to the Vienna University of Music as the youngest student. The rarely performed Overture in D major completes this interesting Danzi programme; a well balanced collection of repertoire rarities.

She brings her own sensitive interpretation to the French Romantic works for cello and orchestra by Saint-Saëns and Offenbach, including the former's First Cello Concerto, a masterpiece of its genre, and a delightful excerpt from the latter's Harmonies des bois “Les Larmes de Jacqueline”. The album was recorded with the Orchestre National de Lille and Alexandre Bloch, and also includes guest appearances by tenor Rolando Villazón and violinist Nemanja Radulović

The Z.E.N. Trio - pianist Zhang Zuo, violinist Esther Yoo and cellist Narek Hakhnazaryan - met on the BBC New Generation Artists' scheme in 2015 and have since performed concerts together for BBC radio as well as across the UK and elsewhere in Europe.

While the trio's name, “Z.E.N.” is an acronym for the three artists' initials, it also represents the philosophy with which they approach chamber music making - the forgoing of the self for total togetherness.

An imaginative and electrifying performer, Zhang Zuo (“Zee Zee”) began her musical training in Germany at the age of five.

Upon returning to her native China, she became one of the most sought after young artists in the nation, collaborating with leading Chinese orchestras with whom she retains a close link.

Esther Yoo first came to international attention in 2010 when, aged 16, she became the youngest prize winner of the 10th International Sibelius Violin Competition.

From 2014 to 2016 she was a BBC Radio 3 New Generation Artist, culminating in her BBC Proms debut.

Esther plays regular return engagements with Philharmonia Orchestra at London's Royal Festival Hall as well as with Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and has performed in tours across Asia and South America.

Since winning the Cello First Prize and Gold Medal at the XIV International Tchaikovsky Competition in 2011 at the age of 22, Narek Hakhnazaryan has performed with most major orchestras across the globe and has established himself internationally as one of the finest cellists of his generation.
