Jonas Kaufmann is now the Otello of this generation. This recording project is the crowning glory of his journey to become today's key exponent of this legendary role.

Verdi's Otello is a remarkable four-act opera based on Shakespeare's play Othello. Otello is considered Verdi's greatest and most demanding role for the tenor voice. Kaufmann made his debut as Otello in June 2017 at the Royal Opera House to widespread critical acclaim. Kaufmann has won numerous prestigious awards including Gramophone Awards and Echo Klassik Award. Jonas Kaufmann sings an Otello for the ages...

“His sound inescapably evokes memories of live performances and classic recordings by Vinay, Vickers and other masters; in a single night, he joined their company.” - The New York Times

'Jonas Kaufmann Sings an 'Otello' for the Ages'- New York Times. On a sweltering night at London's Royal Opera House in June 2017, Jonas Kaufmann made his debut performance as Otello - one of the most coveted and challenging roles in the tenor operatic repertoire. The Guardian commented on his performance: “Kaufmann thrills in a dark, expres-sionistic staging”. This new production by director Keith Warner presents a simultaneously modern and abstract approach to one of Verdi's greatest operas. The DVD and Blu-Ray will also include two short bonus features: - An introduction to the opera & a short feature about the music of the opera with the conductor and tenor.

Polychoral music is so synonymous with 16th century Venice that it is easy to forget that the longest flourishing of this style- possibly even its invention- took place in Germany. Whether or not it was in Munich with the works of Orlande de Lassus that the Gabrielis first encountered its effects, polychoral music came to define German textures and techniques for over a century. Both apprentices and rivals to their Italian counterparts, composers such as Hieronymus Praetorius, Schutz, Hassler and Scheidt, as well as Austria's Biber, fostered a tradition whose influence would extend all the way to the motets of Bach. This performance places a giant of Baroque choral music, Biber's Missa Salisburgensis, alongside the Venetian choral works of Monteverdi from which it takes its inspiration. The combination is a heady one, a triumphal musical celebration uniquely appropriate to mark the 200th anniversary year of Salzburg's affiliation with Austria.

When the revered writer Alessandro Manzoni died in 1873, Verdi was unable to bring himself to attend the funeral. Instead he composed his monumental Messa da Requiem in Manzoni's memory and conducted its first performance on the first anniversary of the writer's death. In addition to its profound spirituality, the work also brings together all the finest qualities familiar from Verdi's operas, qualities that include endless melodic lines and powerful musico-dramatic effects. The present performance was recorded in Los Angeles's legendary Hollywood Bowl in August 2013 and brought together three superstars from the world of music: the conductor Gustavo Dudamel, the tenor Vittorio Grigolo and the bass-baritone Ildebrando D'Arcangelo, all of them at the top of their form. 'It was an important and exceptional evening … That experience involved a radical and wondrous rethinking of the Requiem on Dudamel's part' (Los Angeles Times).

LA Opera's latest production of Verdi s Macbeth (2016) features Plácido Domingo in the title role and Russian mezzo-soprano Ekaterina Semenchuk as Lady Macbeth. The opera is staged by Darko Tresnjak, who won a Tony Award for his direction of the Broadway musical A Gentleman's Guide to Love & Murder.

''When I was a young tenor, I loved playing romantic or heroic leading roles. When I began to add baritone parts to my repertoire six years ago, I was particularly interested in playing fathers, as I could draw from my own experience as a family man. Macbeth is a completely different kind of role for me. He is a murderer, but I think that he is also something of a victim, drawn into his crimes by the witches and by Lady Macbeth.'' Sonya Yoncheva is one of today's fastest rising young opera stars. The young Bulgarian soprano first gained international prominence when she took first prize in the 2010 edition of Plácido Domingo's prestigious Operalia competition at the Teatro alla Scala in Milan. She has collaborated with many artists from the world of opera, and also cross genres: with names from the rock and pop world such as Sting and Elvis Costello, as well as with outstanding classical musicians like Plácido Domingo and Jonas Kaufmann. 'Paris, mon amour' was recorded in one of Europe's most prestigious concert halls - the Palau de la Música in Valencia, under the baton of renowned conductor Frédéric Chaslin. This debut album concentrates on a particularly appealing period, the 'Belle Époque' 1871 to 1914. of cultural life. The 'Belle Époque' eminently suits Sonya, who communicates both elegance and panache onstage, both in her distinctive, multicolored voice and her irresistible personality. Forthcoming residency at the Royal Opera House London in 'Verdi 'La Traviata' - Violetta'. 'OPERA' magazines 'Record Of The Month' for May. The Guardian quotes 'Sonya Yoncheva is surely a star in the making'.

In this latest installment of recordings focusing on the choral traditions of different country's choral music traditions launched last year by the Vokalensemble Stuttgart des SWR, we now arrive in sunny Italy, a country said to have no native choral tradition.

Giuseppe Verdi of course used choirs in his operas, but apart from that there are only a few choral works that have sustained any place in the repertoire, some of the finest of which are presented here. With the beginning of the 20th century, however, one encounters composer's that are less well known, but whom have certainly composed some very exciting music for choir, including Pizzetti, Giacinto Scelsi, Luigi Nono and Goffredo Petrassi.

They all offer poignant, poetic, funny, mysterious, ironic choral works that are original and always interesting in their structure. They show an Italy away from the operatic bel canto, but certainly not lacking in beautiful melodies. This is a most worthy addition to their on-going “country” series.

The Vokalensemble Stuttgart des SWR is one of the most internationally acclaimed choirs. Their scholarship, adventurous programming, wide range of styles and impeccable vocal performances are their trademarks. For many years, the Vokalensemble has been considered one of the top ensembles for contemporary music and has, throughout its 65 year history, presented more world premieres than any other professional choir.

“Grand opera at its grandest - a gorgeous visual and musical treat,” declared The Telegraph of this lavish production of Verdi's rarely-performed Les Vêpres siciliennes, the magnificent five-act grand opéra that first took Paris by storm in 1855.

Presented in its Covent Garden premiere in Autumn 2013, this staging - directed by Stefan Herheim and conducted by the Royal Opera's Music Director, Verdi specialist Sir Antonio Pappano - went on to win the prestigious Olivier Award for Best New Opera Production. The Sunday Times hailed it “the best the Verdi year in Britain has to offer,” praising the standout event of the Verdi bicentenary celebrations. “The Royal Opera has done its favourite composer proud.”

Over the years, the opera has become better known in its Italian version (I vespri siciliani), but Verdi wrote it to a French libretto (by the celebrated Eugène Scribe) and adopted elements of the musical style of Giacomo Meyerbeer, who in the 1830s and 1840s defined the quintessentially Parisian genre of grand opéra. After its premiere La Presse stated that: “Verdi's music has conformed to the procedure invented by French genius without losing anything of its Italian ardour.” Although it saw Verdi moving away from the tight dramatic structures and daring innovations of Rigoletto, Il trovatore and La traviata - the 'Big Three' that directly preceded it - its epic scale and rich colours paved the way for masterpieces like La forza del destino, Don Carlos and Aida.

Considered one of the most promising Verdians of her generation, the French-trained Armenian soprano Lianna Haroutounian rises to all these challenges as the Duchess Hélène. American tenor Bryan Hymel, whose recital album Héroïque is also released on Warner Classics in February 2015, takes on one of Verdi's highest tenor roles.
