Willie Steyn, the author, was one of six hundred Boer prisoners sent by ship to the island of Ceylon to be interned in the Diyatalawa prisoner-of-war camp during the Anglo-Boer War. While their ship was anchored in Colombo harbour on a dark, moonless night, Steyn and four of his fellow prisoners lowered themselves into the sea, each waiting until his predecessor had got away undetected by the guards on board and in vessels patrolling around the ship. These 'five swimmers' (as they were later described by President Paul Kruger) were picked up and taken on board by a Russian ship at anchor in the harbour.
The Russians fêted them as honorary first-class passengers, and protected them even after they had gone ashore at Theodosia in the Crimea. From the Crimea they travelled to St Petersburg, Berlin, Utrecht, The Hague and Amsterdam. After a short stay in Amsterdam, they sailed under assumed names, on a German ship, from Hamburg to German West Africa. From there they trekked, with considerable difficulty, to South Africa, where Willie Steyn joined up with the Maritz and Smuts commandos in the Cape Colony during the guerrilla phase of the war.
Steyn concludes with a humorous account of consternation in Colombo, when incredulous British officers discovered that five of their prisoners had escaped - something they had not thought possible.
The charm of Steyn's personal account of his adventures lies in its understatement and its matter-of-fact simplicity. He does not portray himself as a hero, nor does he lay any claim to fame, but his account gathers intensity and force as the story progresses.
Willie Steyn was intent on escape from the moment he was taken into captivity, and the reader experiences a corresponding intensity, encountering Willie as a free spirit throughout his captivity and his protracted journey home.
Deneys Reitz - author of Commando and well known for his own bravery - called Steyn 'one of our bravest men', and described Steyn's escape as 'a deed that is in my opinion without equal in the history of escape'.

Dis 1984. PW Botha is desperaat.

How Mandela ruled from prison
The late eighties was a highly politicised environment. Willem Laubscher was healing some of the world's best-known political prisoners, amongst them Walter Sisulu and Govan Mbeki. When Nelson Mandela was scheduled for a similar operation, all hell broke loose.
The National Party was quietly plotting to smuggle Mandela out of the country, possibly hoping that he would escape, while the ANC was scoring points by casting doubt on the medical services that white doctors like Laubscher was willing to provide to the political prisoners.
A relatively simple medical operation turned into an international diplomatic crisis.
Meanwhile, in most ironic of twists, the security police was taking desperate measures to ensure Mandela's safety - the country could simply not afford an assassination attempt.
Willem Laubscher was the medical practitioner in the eye of this storm; Nelson Mandela was the calm strategist who had held out against pressure from both the jittery NP government and the increasingly boisterous ANC, with Winnie Mandela already larger than life, stoking the media and exploiting every available loophole to embarrass the government.
This is the story of a few weeks of diplomatic chaos, and a security operation that completely overshadowed the medical procedure Mandela was scheduled for.

The Anglo-Boer War in 100 Objects brings the victories and the tragedies - and the full extent of the human drama behind this war - to life through 100 iconic objects.
A Mafeking siege note helps to illustrate the acute shortages caused by the siege, while a spade used by a Scottish soldier at Magersfontein and the boots of a Boer soldier who died at Spion Kop tell of the severity of some of the famous battles.
The book follows the course of the war but also highlights specific themes, such as British and Boer weaponry, medical services, POW camps, as well as major role-players on both sides.
The text is interspersed with striking historical images from the museum's photographic collection. A further 200 secondary objects have been included to help tell the story of a conflict that left an indelible mark on the South African landscape.

This fascinating book, originally published in 1971, had its origins in a series of feature articles for the Pretoria News between 1968 and 1970. Since then much has changed and that era now seems as remote as Kruger's did in 1970. The original text is reprinted here with minimal editing. Pretoria today is a different place, not just politically but in the street scene. Though happily some survive in 2007, many of the buildings pictured here have disappeared, such as the old Town Hall and the first Opera House. Gone too are many of the original pictures, some burnt in the fire that destroyed the main part of Munitoria and the city's priceless archive. Kruger's Pretoria provides the memory of a town long gone.

This title is a contribution to our understanding of how demographic consolidation works. It skilfully integrates broad comparative analyses of the roles played by such factors as economic performance, institutional engineering, civil society and mass support with detailed attention to the situation-specific factors influencing democratic consolidation in five different settings - Poland, East Germany, South Africa, Chile and South Korea.

In the story of the The Golden Republic, Bulpin sets a stage on which we meet some of the strangest characters that fate had ever attached to the puppet strings of destiny. The grim Mzilikazi; the hot-headed Hendrik Potgieter and his trekkers; prospectors like Charlie the Reefer; gaudy rogues like Gunn of Gunn and his Highlanders; bandits, highwaymen, rand lords, gold rushers, to name just a few. He tells of leaders like Pretorius and Kruger, and many others who each played a part in establishing the Republic of the Transvaal - a seemingly impossible task considering all the small wars and skirmishes on the veld and the rumble of arguments rising out of each farmhouse.
In his remarkably engaging style of writing he sketches scenes of rough but beautiful land, which must have been fascinating to explorers who roamed about the old Transvaal with all its scenic novelties where every turn yielded some marvel for the geologist, the botanist, or the zoologist.
The Golden Republic tells of the adventure that raised the Republic to its peak and the complex intrigues that brought it down to the dust; of misfortune and riches, and despair of such magnitude that the birth of a Republic seemed inevitable considering the economic disaster it at times experienced ... Until gold poked out its shiny head and gave hope again. The characters who crowded into diggers' towns were some of the wildest and most colourful ever known in the Transvaal. From all over South Africa they flocked to the scene, in the hope of finding fortune. Most of them were just opportunists, who knew nothing about gold except how to spend it.
This is a brilliant book of the birth, life and death of the old Republic written in the tell-tale style Bulpin does so well.

This book tells the dramatic story of the Transvaal from 1884 until 1900 - a period which covers a singularly lurid stretch of South Africa's past. In his remarkably engaging style of writing, Bulpin transports readers back to the rugged Transvaal where gold seemed to be the centre of all things. It was a time of adventure in which any man could strike it lucky, or die alone with little else than disappointment as company. The remarkable story of the Witwatersrand provides an often hilarious background to a history of events so important, that they are still of vital interest to every South African today. All the fantastic intrigue, corruption and double-crossing which led to the grim climax of the Anglo-Boer War is described with a wealth of detail and anecdote.
Thomas Victor Bulpin (1918-1999) was a writer about African big game hunters, South African travel and history. He was a well-known and very prolific travel writer - he wrote 29 books and thousands of pamphlets and features on southern Africa for magazines and newspapers. An inveterate traveller, he was the author of classics such as Islands in a forgotten sea, The Ivory Trail, Natal and the Zulu Country, The Hunter is Death and the Illustrated Guide to Southern Africa.

This book is without a doubt the most remarkable true account ever written of adventure in Africa. It is the story of the life of George Rushby, an adventurer, ivory hunter, prospector, game rancher who immigrated to SA from Britain in search of a new life, and all the curious and violent events that befell him as a game ranger of Tanganyika. He faced and defeated the lion man-eaters of the Njombe district.

George Rushby vows to rid the land of these man-eaters, but he soon discovers they are unlike any lions he has ever encountered. He gets no help in his fight from the villagers who believe the killings to be the work of the local witchdoctor, a man they fear to cross. When a child Rushby loves is killed, the battle becomes personal.

The reader is transported into a world of tumultuous events, many of which baffle all rational thought. George Rushy was duly referred to as 'the prince of adventurers' and we join him on his travels and experiences in Africa.
