First hand accounts of sightings, scrapes and encounters in one of Africa's greatest national parks.

An enraged elephant flips a car onto its roof. A lioness prises open the door of a terrified couple. A leopard helps itself to a family's picnic breakfast. A fleeing impala leaps through an open car window. A lion charges around inside a busy rest camp. A hyaena snatches a baby from a tent. A tourist takes a bath in a croc infested waterhole... These are just a few of the 101 jaw-dropping sightings, scrapes and encounters in this collection of extraordinary true stories from the roads, camps, picnic sites and walking trails of South Africa's Kruger National Park, as told by the very people who experienced them. There are no game ranger tales here - each and every story happened to an ordinary Kruger visitor doing what over a million tourists do in this spectacular reserve each year.

It is a book to keep by your bedside in Kruger, to dip into at home when you're missing the bush, to lend to friends who've never visited the Park or to pore over before your next trip. Just don't expect to ever sleep soundly in a safari tent again...

Dr Joan Louwrens was always drawn to wild places, which were balm to her soul. When her husband died, leaving her alone with two small daughters to raise, she threw herself wholeheartedly into 'adventure medicine', seeking out the world's most remote corners - on land and at sea - to practise her healing, both her own and others.
Working in wild places from the Kruger Park to the Australian Outback, the Atlantic Ocean islands, and both the south and north poles, 'Doctor Joan' dealt with a vast range of medical issues, from rabies to deep-vein thrombosis, childbirth to wisdom-tooth extraction, catatonia to depression.

Showing an eagerness to learn and a humility that isn't always a given in her profession, and with a wry eye and a sympathetic outlook, Joan Louwrens has written a memoir that's a poignant and often funny story of a life lived to the full

From the Cape of Good Hope to the Sea of Galilee, along the Great Rift Valley of East Africa, their goal was to symbolically retrace the passage of early Man, from Australopithecus to Modern Man. Starting where volume I leaves off, this volume entrances readers with new, unexpected events both heart-warming and horrifying.

This collection brings further stories of life in the Kruger park as the wife of a game ranger. After eleven years in the remote Mahlangeni region they are transferred, first to Crocodile Bridge and then to Pretorius Kop. Fully at peace in the wild and lonely landscapes of the North, Kobie fears she will never adapt to the relatively people-populated southern area. It takes time, but eventually she is able to acknowlege that the move has shown her "other Edens" and has given her a store of the new and precious memories. Foremost among these memories is the unique experience of raising Leo, an abandoned lion cub. It is a facinating and emotional encounter with the king of the beasts, which brings her and her family equal measures of joy and sorrow.

Travelling in West Africa by public transport, Sihle Khumalo turned a wish list into an itinerary. The plans for his trip were lean on practical detail, but grand in concept: Visit five World Heritage Sites listed by UNESCO for their historical and cultural significance.

Having never set foot in Sénégal, Mali, Burkina Faso, Benin or Togo, Sihle planned to inform himself about Francophone Africa as he went along. Had he pondered the implications of not speaking French in a part of the world where it is the lingua franca, or what the public transport might be like in this part of the world, he might have set off less bright-eyed and bushy-tailed.

But Sihle is not one to be deterred by setbacks and deadends. His flexibility, irreÂ-pressible optimism and robust sense of humour, coupled with an unexpected sensiÂ-tivity towards his host countries, see him reach all his goals - or almost.

Just over 200 years ago, in 1810, a 30-year-old Englishman named William Burchell landed in Cape Town after a four-year stint as a naturalist on St Helena island. The following year he embarked on an epic journey through the Cape Colony, which lasted four years and during which he covered 7 000 kilometres, mainly through unexplored terrain, and collected over 50 000 plant and animal specimens, as well as built up a vast collection of sketches and paintings. He went on to travel in Brazil, and after many years back in Britain, he committed suicide at the age of 82.

Burchell's Travels tells the story of Burchell's journeys, bringing to life an important figure who has faded into historical obscurity. It is a fascinating account of what travel was like 200 years ago - reconstructed from the rich source of Burchell's own writings.

Beautifully illustrated with over 100 of Burchell's sketches and paintings, this is a perfect book for anyone interested in history, art, nature and travel.

Cape Town Then and Now is a unique visual portrait of Cape Town and the Cape Peninsula, contrasting rare archival photographs with stunning contemporary views. The book draws on the superb photographic collections of the Western Cape Archives, including the work of Arthur Elliott, Thomas Ravenscroft and Henry Steer. These images portray the changing Cape Town scene from the 1880s to the 1930s - landscape, architecture, transport,
recreation and the march of history. Where possible, the modern-day photographs, which include spectacular aerial panoramas, have been shot
from the same locations as the originals. Detailed captions explain the differences between the old and the new views, and bring out fascinating
continuities over time. Cape Town Then and Now is a visual journey that will appeal to Capetonians and visitors alike.

If you could read only one book about Cape Town - to truly understand it, to glimpse its soul - which would it be?
An unflinching portrayal of an enigmatic metropolis drawing on Trotter's experiences with prostitutes, sailors, minstrels, professors, pupils, gangsters, politicians, and 'poo-throwing' protestors.
An incisive mix of travel narrative, literary non-fiction, and personal memoir, this book reveals the often hidden contradictory realities of Cape Town, a place between two oceans, between first and third worlds, between east and west. The majority of its citizens: a people between black and white, native and settler, African and European.
How can we understand a city that is most assuredly in Africa, though not—seemingly—of it?
By exploring this city's tween-ness, we can begin to understand the soul of this town—haunted by its past, unsure of its future.
A short book just over 100 pages, it allows readers to quickly identify the unique pulse of the city, its throbbing historical, social, cultural and political beat that underlies the transactions between all Capetonians.
This is not a substitute for a traditional guidebook, but a perfect companion to one, filling in the intimate details that other books leave out.

Cape Town: A Place Between is the first of the Intimate Geographies series. It provides just the right amount of insight for locals and visitors to understand the deeper meanings of their experiences in the Mother City. Each title in the Intimate Geographies Series provides a personal, idiosyncratic, in-depth portrayal of a place, filtered through the experiences of an individual who has lived there, knows it, understands it, has a powerful relationship with it. Future volumes will feature other intense portrayals of compelling off-beat cities around the globe.
