Commotio, Matthew Berry, Bob Chilcott

Bob Chilcott is one of Britain's most popular and respected composers and his choral music is performed worldwide. He has always embraced a broad stylistic palette and his writing for voice combined with jazz instrumentation gives these works a sense of vitality and energy. Performed by leading jazz soloists and Commotio, the distinguished promoters of contemporary repertoire, this sequence of brilliant villanelles, folk song arrangements and witty settings reveals once again the breadth of Chilcott's musical imagination. Chilcott has enjoyed a lifelong association with choral music, as a composer, conductor, and singer. He was a chorister and choral scholar in the choir of King's College, Cambridge and for twelve years was a member of the vocal group The King's Singers. In 1997 he became a full time composer. A Little Jazz Mass, Requiem, and St. John Passion are among a number of works from his prolific output which are performed worldwide. He has written large-scale works, including The Angry Planet, community-based projects, pieces for children, and a significant amount of music for the church. In 2017 Chilcott was awarded an Honorary Fellowship of The Royal School of Church Music.

Nils Mönkemeyer has been hailed as one of the leading violists of his generation. For this recording, Nils has selected four of his favourite works by Walton, Bruch and Pärt and is joined by the Bamberg Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Markus Poschner. The Viola Concerto by Sir William Walton (1902-1983) showcases traditional English tone, enhanced by the sounds and rhythms of jazz. The German composer Max Bruch (1838-1920) is represented by two Romantic works, Kol nidrei, the original cello part of which acquires a unique timbre in Nils Mönkemeyer's arrangement for the viola, and the Romance for viola and orchestra. The fourth and final major work included here is Fratres by Arvo Pärt (*1935). Although published in 1977, it had to wait until 2008 to be heard in its version for viola, string orchestra and percussion.

Mezzo-soprano Lena Belkina's first album garnered high praise: “She sings Desdemona's 'Willow Song' from Rossini's Otello with lyrical intensity... Nacqui all'affanno e al pianto” from La Cenerentola is sharp-witted and brilliant”, opined Das Opernglas, while WAZ (Westdeutsche Allgemeine Zeitung) wrote: “The coloratura is splendidly placed whether she's mobilizing Tudor fury (in Anna Bolena), questioning her heart in the Barber of Seville or letting the soul of 'Tanti affetti' (La donna del lago) overflow with elegant beauty.”

For her second album, “Classic Vienna”, she has recorded the most famous representatives of Viennese Classicism, Mozart (1756-1791), Haydn (1732-1809) and Gluck (1714-1787), with the ORF Vienna Radio Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Andrea Sanguinetti. Her Mozart selections include the aria “Parto, ma tu ben mio” from La clemenza di Tito, “Il padre adorato” from Idomeneo and the concert aria “Ch'io mi scordi di te?”. She sings Gluck's arias “Che puro ciel” from Orfeo ed Euridice and “Oh, del mio dolce ardor” from Paride ed Elena as well as Haydn's aria “Se non piange un' infelice” from L'isola disabitata and his Scena di Berenice. The programme is rounded off with the overtures from Mozart's Così fan tutte, Gluck's Armide and Haydn's Acide e Galatea.

On her new album “Russian Light”, Olga Peretyatko presents favourite arias and songs from her homeland Russia - by Glinka, Rimsky-Korsakov, Rachmaninov, Stravinsky and Shostakovich. Many of them are well known (Rachmaninov's Vocalise) but there are also unknown rare jewels on the album like the songs from Rachmaninov or the opera arias by Shostakovich. She teamed with the Ural Philharmonic Orchestra, one of the best orchestras in Russia, and excellent for this kind of repertoire with conductor Dimitry Liss, specialist for this repertoire.

The main focus of “Russian Light” falls on excerpts from operas that have left a deep imprint on Russia's national music. Among these are Glinka's Ruslan and Ludmila as well as Rimsky-Korsakov's The Golden Cockerel, The Snow Maiden and The Tsar's Bride. The latter piece represents a personal triumph for Ms Peretyatko, for she sang the role of Marfa under Daniel Barenboim to open the 2013 season at the Berlin State Opera. With her silvery timbre and solid mastery of coloratura she thrilled not only the audience but the critic of Der Tagespiegel: “Olga Peretyatko projects Marfa as a being so delicate and other-worldly that it strikes the knowledgeable listener to the core.”

Avi Avital (Mandolin/Mandola), Omer Avital (Bass/Oud), Itamar Doari (Percussion), Yonathan Avishai (Piano/Keyboards), Uri Sharlin (Accordion)

“The music on the album is about this special bond between Omer and myself, between the history and cultural identity we share with each other. Here I might be said to hoist a flag and return to my roots. It's very intensive, extremely authentic, and it means a great deal to me.” Avi Avital

“Explosively charismatic” (New York Times) in live performance, Avital has been described as playing “with the freedom of rock or jazz musicians” (Boston Globe) even in Baroque repertoire.

Avital Meets Avital is Avi's first cross-genre album release. Following three core classical releases on DG, Avi now explores the sound of world music, incl. several world premiere recordings.

For his very personal project he teamed up with jazz bassist Omer Avital, with whom he shares much more than just a surname:

Both attended the same music academy in Jerusalem, where Omer studied jazz and Avi the classical tradition, and both were born and raised by Moroccan parents in Israel. Having grown up with this inner ambivalence, for a long time the two musicians focused on their Israeli homeland and Western musical culture, Avi Avital in classical music, Omer Avital in jazz.

Avital Meets Avital brings their different musical backgrounds and shared cultural heritage into dialogue, drawing on the diverse influences of Moroccan and North African sounds, classical and folk traditions, Israeli harmonies, and Mediterranean rhythms, to create a musical melting pot where chamber music meets the raw energy of jazz.

All pieces are composed and arranged by Omer and Avi Avital, apart from the album's final track.

Tracks

1. Omer Avital: Zamzama
2. Omer Avital: Lonely Girl
3. Omer Avital: Ana Maghrebi
4. Avital: Avi's Song

6. Avital: Prelude
7. Omer Avital: Maroc

It's just that simple. He does not sing just because he has a beautiful, expressive voice. He does not sing just because it brings him success and house-rocking acclaim. Fernando Varela sings because that is who he is. He sings what he loves, whether it is a pop standard, an original song he had a hand in writing, or Puccini's noblest tenor aria “Nessun dorma.” The underlying truth - who he is and what he does, in everything he dreams and achieves - is what brings Fernando Varela to the center of a worldwide stage with the release of Vivere.

The high wire act of this powerhouse voice can wow all kinds of audiences, from the opera house to a small club. If most tenors live in one sphere and like to dabble in another, Fernando Varela wants to embrace them all and reinvent the possibilities.

He puts that dream on the line with Vivere.

On his new album, the classically trained tenor bridges the gap between immortal Puccini arias such as “Nessun Dorma” and catchy pop hits like Christina Perri's “A Thousand Years” (from the Twilight Saga).

She followed up her international breakthrough at the Salzburg Festival with two celebrated CD releases in 2005 that laid the foundation of her rich discography: a Mozart recital and the world premiere of Vivaldi's opera Bajazet. The present album combines the loveliest moments from these recordings.

Giacomo Meyerbeer, the master of Parisian grand opéra, was hugely successful in his time and a major influence on Verdi and Wagner. His music has fascinated Diana Damrau since her student days. With her brilliant coloratura, lyricism and dramatic power, the soprano rises triumphantly to the vocal and expressive challenges of arias from 10 of his operas, singing in French, Italian and German. Two of the arias receive their world premiere recording with this album. The idea of a Meyerbeer album has been close to Diana Damrau's heart since she first recorded for Erato back in 2006. She became fascinated by the composer's music as a student in Würzburg, when she was invited to perform his cantata Gli amori di Teolinda. “I immersed myself in Meyerbeer's world,” she explains, “and was excited by his multifaceted writing for the voice, by his orchestral colours, his theatrical instincts, the powerful and varied way in which he expresses emotion, his splendid melodies and, last but not least, his ability to capture precisely the right 'national style'. If you compare his Italian, German and French works, it is like listening to three different composers.”

The South African-born pianist Renée Reznek is releasing her recording of new South African piano music on the Prima Facie label. Many of these pieces have been composed for Renée who specialises in twentieth century and new music. With the exception of Peter Klatzow's Barcarolle, these works are recorded here for the first time.

Speaking of the CD, Renée Reznek said: 'Recording this CD has given me a wonderful way to reconnect with the country I grew up in. I am so grateful to these distinguished composers for their fantastic music which reflects the rich, diverse culture of South Africa. 'The majority of the pieces on the CD combine traditional South African music with contemporary Western European techniques. This is true of PMB Impromptu, composed for Renée by internationally renowned composer Kevin Volans who like Renée grew up in Pietermaritzburg or PMB. Both Michael Blake's Broken Line , composed for Renée, and Robert Fokkens' Five Miniatures were inspired by Xhosa bow music. Similarly Hendrik Hofmeyr's Partita Africana and David Kosviner's Mbira Melody, also written for Renée, are sourced from local music traditions. Neo Muyanga's Hade Tata, a tribute to Nelson Mandela, celebrates the 20th anniversary of the first democratic elections in SA. Muyanga combines Nguni melodies with township jazz and struggle songs. Other pieces by David Earl and Peter Klatzow show a more European influence.

Enriched by her first collaboration in 2015 with this Cuban Youth Orchestra Simone Dinnerstein returned to Havana this year to record two of Mozart's most well-known and loved piano concertos with them.

One of the first recorded classical music collaborations between US and Cuban musicians since the thawing of political relations between the two countries.

The young Havana-based orchestra overcomes challenges rarely faced by western orchestras including lack of access to quality instruments and materials (the musicians often retune their instruments down to A336 to ensure longevity of their strings).
