Mahler's masterpiece is subtitled as - A Symphony for Tenor and Alto (or Baritone) - and therefore traditionally two voices have sung the six movements of the work. However Jonas Kaufmann feels differently about this and wanted to sing both parts himself. In June this year he joined the Wiener Philharmoniker and conductor Jonathan Nott in a special concert in the Goldener Saal at the Musikverein in Vienna whereby he sang the entire work himself.

Four years after his fascinating and highly praised album with works of the Spanish composer Mompou, Arcadi Volodos went into the Berlin Teldex Studio again to deliver another reference recording, this time with the music of Johannes Brahms. Volodos has played the Brahms solo pieces over the past years in places all over the world and received highest critical acclaim for his interpretation. The Brahms solo works are perfect to show Volodos unique ability to create a special and magic sound, a sound “which lifts us, the listener, into the air and which makes us believe that the world is floating' (Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung). Recorded in the famous Teldex Studios Berlin in three sessions (2015 - 2017) on a great Steinway Grand Piano specially tuned by Michel Brandjes, one of the best tuners in the world. There is no editing in this recording. Volodos played every piece over and over again to develop his idea of structure and sound and chose the best version of each piece after the end of the recording.

Yevgeny Sudbin (piano)
Tapiola Sinfonietta, Osmo Vänskä

On two previous discs, Yevgeny Sudbin and Osmo Vänskä have released Beethoven's three last piano concertos to critical acclaim. Distinctions include Editor's Choice in Gramophone and the performances have been described as 'electrifying' (classicfm.com), 'absolutely stunning' (Fanfare) and 'a Beethoven experience you will not want to miss' (ClassicsToday.com).

For the final disc in their cycle, Sudbin and Vänskä have travelled to Helsinki to team up with Tapiola Sinfonietta, one of the top Nordic ensembles, and well suited for these earlier and more classical of Beethoven's concertos. Of the two, the one we now know as the Second was actually begun several years before Concerto No. 1, and indeed even before Beethoven left Bonn for Vienna. During the following decade, Beethoven returned to the score repeatedly and made substantial revisions - including composing a new final movement - and ultimately the C major concerto reached publication first. Both concertos were conceived long before Beethoven's involvement with the symphonic genre, and the influence of Mozart and Haydn is evident in the interaction between the orchestra and the soloist - but Beethoven's individual spirit is nevertheless unmistakeable.

In 2013 Florian Uhlig released a recording with French Piano concertos on SWRmusic (CD93302) which received excellent critics all over the world and became one of that year's bestsellers of the label.

Florian Uhlig is again accompanied by the German Radio Philharmonic under Pablo Gonzales - a collaboration which already made his first recording of French Piano concertos a huge success.

This CD contains again piano concertos by Ravel and Françaix, which supplement the concertos of the 2013 recording, and rarely performed and very imaginative works for piano and orchestra with concert character by Germaine Tailleferre and Nadia Boulanger.

A prolific composer of instrumental music including symphonies, Leopold Koželuch was one of the most prominent Bohemian composers working in Vienna during the late 18th and early 19th centuries. His best works reveal an impressive command of the musical language of viennese classicism and at times a lyricism that seems to foreshadow the youthful works of Schubert. This recording draws on original sources and corrects a number of mistakes encountered in previously published versions.

Sonya Yoncheva devotes her second solo album to the music of Handel, showing another facet of her wide-ranging repertoire. Being an alumna of William Christie's Le Jardin des Voix, the Baroque era formed her musical understanding at an early stage of her career, laying the foundation for her versatile & broad-reaching repertoire. Currently praised as “the best Traviata in the world at present” (Die Welt), Sonya Yoncheva is one of today's fastest rising opera stars. She is a regular guest at the world's leading opera houses such as the Metropolitan Opera, Royal Opera House, Bayerische Staatsoper, Berlin State Opera, Wiener Staatsoper & the Opéra de Paris. A great composer of vocal music, Handel based some of his most beautiful operas & oratories on the enchanting sensibility of the feminine voice. His heroines are strong, independent women determining their own destiny - attributes Sonya relates to in all respects. From Mar 3rd - Apr 18th, 2017 Sonya will embark on a concert tour featuring the Baroque repertoire highlighted on the Handel album release.

Universally considered as one of the greatest violinists of our time, Anne-Sophie Mutter's stunning and multi-faceted music-making extends across masterworks from the full breadth of the violin repertoire.

Mutterissimo - The Art of Anne-Sophie Mutter is a selection of highlights from her discography, personally picked by Mutter herself, bringing together recordings that date for the most part from the last twenty years. It invites listeners to undertake two tours of Anne-Sophie Mutter's multiple worlds of music:

The first explores the highways and byways of the core repertory and features well-known works for violin and orchestra by Dvořák and Schumann alongside less familiar pieces. The second one, often with Mutter's long-standing piano partner, Lambert Orkis, combines virtuosity and light-heartedness; the popular and the surprising; and emotion and rhythmic energy.

For many years Anne-Sophie Mutter has performed not only in major international concert halls but recently also in clubs, where a young audience, largely unconcerned with traditional rituals, reacts to the music much more spontaneously. It is only logical, therefore, that she increasingly uses social media to engage in a dialogue with her fans.

Night, dreams, and farewells with an outstanding choir. Although different in many respects - compositional approach, geographical origin, language - the works that make up this adventurous programme from the Norwegian Soloists' Choir and its artistic director Grete Pedersen are all, to quote Shakespeare, 'such stuff as dreams are made on'. In various ways they refer to night and dreams, to the distant past or to an uncertain future. With composers from Denmark, Norway, Finland, Germany and Greece, and texts ranging from fragments of ancient Assyrian and Sumerian (in Xenakis's Nuits) and the 8th-century Wessobrunner Prayer (Lachenmann) to poems by Balzac (Saariaho), Nietzsche (Janson) and Rilke (Nørgård), the concept of 'here and now' becomes blurred and, indeed, dreamlike. The choir and Grete Pedersen released their first disc for BIS in 2007 - an all-Grieg programme awarded a Diapason d'or and with interpretations described in Le Monde de la Musique as 'so beautiful as to make you lose your breath'. The five titles that have followed since then range from the folk-inspired 'White Night' ('some of the most striking and moving singing put down on disc for years', Gramophone) and most recently a programme combining works by the Norwegian composer Knut Nystedt (1915 - 2014) with motets by Bach (BIS2184). Meeting the different challenges posed by such varied repertoire with flawless and always idiomatic performances, the Norwegian Soloists' Choir is a wonderful instrument in the hands of Grete Pedersen. On the present disc musicians from Oslo Sinfonietta join the team in the accompanied works, which include Nørgård's Singe die Gärten for eight-part choir and 8 instruments and Janson's Nocturne for double choir, 2 cellos, harp and 2 percussionists.

A rapidly rising star on today's opera scene, Sonya Yoncheva appears in this album alongside 'Lyric Artist of the Year' winner Karine Deshayes in a masterwork of the sacred music repertoire; Pergolesi's Stabat Mater. Yoncheva has performed on various stages worldwide, most recently in France where she astonished the audience with her performance in both Verdi's La Traviata & Tchaikovsky's Iolanta, and in Montpellier where she sang at the Radio France International Music Festival. ''Her voice is gorgeous to listen to. It is always used with penetrating intelligence and supple musicality.'' (The Times) This recording also features the Ensemble Amarillis on period instruments. Founded in 1994, the Ensemble Amarillis is one of Europe's most original Baroque ensembles. “The Ensemble Amarillis responds with mercurial temperaments, from sublimely intimate to brazenly flamboyant.
