Joseph Haydn claimed to have discovered the string quartet form by accident. His Op.1 no.1 has the cheerful five-movement form of a Divertimento, while the glorious and harmonically daring Op.77 no.1 was among the last he completed in the genre. Falling between the two, Op.33 no.5 is full of rhythmic surprises and a theme that gives it the nickname, 'How do you do?'

Today, the Goldmund Quartet is considered one of the most exciting young string quartets in Europe. Since their début at Munich's Prinzregententheater, the quartet has appeared at international festivals such as the Festival Aix-en-Provence, Festival de Música y Danza Granada, Ludwigsburger Schlossfestspiele and Heidelberger Frühling. The quartet has been awarded several prizes, including a Yehudi Menuhin Live Music Now scholarship, and recently a scholarship from the Deutscher Musikwettbewerb as well as the 2015 Bavarian Young Artist Award. Concert recordings have been made by the Bavarian Radio, ARD, Deutschlandradio and Einsfestival.

These two concertos - one a staple of the repertoire, the other almost unknown - share melodic richness and a Spanish influence. Lalo's Symphonie espagnole reflects the quicksilver technique of its dedicatee, Pablo de Sarasate, in its ingenious and virtuosic passagework, with its moods and rhythms indelibly Iberian in feel. Joan Manén, in his day almost as famous as his fellow Catalan Pau Casals, was an admired virtuoso violinist and a prominent composer. His Concierto español, the first of three violin concertos, is suffused with technical demands, lyric warmth, and rhapsodic nostalgia. Soloist Tianwa Yang's Sarasate recordings have received international acclaim.

Winner of the prestigious Echo Klassik Instrumentalist of the Year 2015 Award for her Naxos recording Ysaÿe's 6 Sonatas for Solo Violin, the Best Up-and-Coming Artist 2014 Award and the Annual Prize of the German Record Critics 2014 for her Naxos recordings of the Mendelssohn Violin Concertos and Complete Music for Violin by Sarasate, Tianwa Yang is referred to as “an unquestioned master of the violin” by American Record Guide who “rises above her competition” (Fanfare), while quickly establishing herself as a leading international performer and recording artist. Of her previously released recordings of Pablo de Sarasate's complete works for violin, David Hurwitz of ClassicsToday.com calls Ms. Yang a “sensationally talented violinist,” while All Things Strings speaks of her “stunning effortless virtuosity” and “uncanny affinity for Spanish music.”

Daniil Trifonov has been described by The Times as 'the finest young pianist of our age'.

After his successful 'Rachmaninov Variations' last year, he has now created another statement to define his extraordinary and growing legacy. It is dedicated to the greatest pianist of his own century: Franz Liszt.

The repertoire is Liszt's Complete Concert Etudes. These Etudes remain amongst the most challenging piano pieces ever composed - and are rarely recorded or performed. This is the first time that the Complete Liszt Etudes have been recorded as a whole for DG. And Daniil Trifonov is one of the few pianists to have recorded them all in one go - in an unbelievable five days.

Beyond his phenomenal technique, Daniil Trifonov is a distinctly Russian artist: an intense, soulful musician in the great Russian tradition whose presentation and repertoire set him apart from all other young piano stars of today.

Presto Recordings of the Year Finalist 2016

Violinist Joshua Bell and cellist Steven Isserlis are joined by two acclaimed musical forces - pianist Jeremy Denk and the Academy of St Martin in the Fields, of which Bell is Music Director - in a landmark joint recording, For the Love of Brahms (Sony Classical). Available September 30, 2016, the new album is a unique project that features works of Brahms and Schumann that Bell calls “music about love and friendship.”

Bell, Isserlis and Denk unite here in Brahms's first published chamber work, the Piano Trio in B Major, Op. 8 in its rarely performed original 1854 version. Isserlis also joins Bell - as violin soloist and director - and the Academy of St Martin in the Fields in Brahms's last orchestral work, the celebrated Double Concerto (for Violin and Cello) in A Minor, Op. 102. Bell, Isserlis and members of the Academy also offer the first recording of an unusual coupling: the slow movement of Schumann's rarely heard Violin Concerto, in a version for string orchestra made by Benjamin Britten, who also added a short coda.

“I met Steven almost 30 years ago at a music festival, and he has been my close friend and frequent chamber music partner ever since. Jeremy and I have also shared a long-lasting friendship and we have recorded and performed together for more than a decade,” states Bell. “Therefore it is fitting that we all come together on this record to play music that is so deeply rooted in love and friendship.” Earlier this year, Bell, Isserlis and the Academy performed the Brahms Double Concerto to critical acclaim on an 11-date European tour, which Bell play-directed. The tour also featured the Schumann, and this recording followed. “Steven and I have performed the Double concerto of Brahms many times over the years, and I am so pleased that we found the perfect collaborators in the Academy of St. Martin in the Fields so we could finally record this piece that means so much to us,” adds Bell.

For the Love of Brahms continues Joshua Bell's long and acclaimed partnership with the London-based Academy of St Martin in the Fields. Since 2011, Bell has been the orchestra's principal conductor, succeeding its founder Sir Neville Marriner and the only other person to hold that title. Bell's most recent Sony Classical recordings with the orchestra include Vivaldi's The Four Seasons, a Bach concerto collection, and Bell's first recording solely as a conductor, of Beethoven's Fourth and Seventh Symphonies.

Lucas Debargue, the most talked about pianist at the 2015 Tchaikovsky Piano Competition, releases his first studio album BACH, BEETHOVEN, MEDTNER. Nikolai Medtner is a Russian composer, contemporary of Rachmaninov & Scriabin with German roots and influences. Debargue performed Medtner's melodious sonata to spectacular success at the 2015 Tchaikovsky Competition with applause that lasted over fifteen minutes. Besides Bach's melancholic Toccata C minor BWV 911, Debargue is keen to engage in forgotten works as with Medtner and further puts a spotlight on the Sonata No. 7 in D major by Beethoven, which remained in the shadow of the famous Pathétique. Debargue only started professional training aged 20 but won the Tchaikovsky Piano Competition's 4th prize only four years later, being described by media as the “real winner” due to his unusual background and magnificent playing.

Hermann Goetz's lifespan was no longer than Mozart's, and though much admired by contemporaries, as a tragic genius his music became almost forgotten, and the domain of but a few connoisseurs such as Gustav Mahler. Goetz's style remained closer to Schumann and Mendelssohn, preferring lyricism and clarity to the more radical approaches of Liszt and Wagner. The virtuoso First Piano Concerto was a student work, its lovely central Adagio sharing a use of colourful wind parts with the freshly optimistic Second Piano Concerto composed six years later.

Composer Michael Daugherty creates colourful musical portraits in this recording, featuring larger-than-life personalities drawn from 20th-century American culture. Tales of Hemingway is a dramatic cello concerto, evoking the turbulent life, adventures, and literature of author Ernest Hemingway. American Gothic is a dynamic concerto for orchestra, reflecting on the creative world of Iowa artist Grant Wood. Once Upon a Castle is a virtuosic sinfonia concertante for organ and orchestra, inspired by the rich history of the Hearst Castle, built high upon the California Pacific coast by billionaire Randolph Hearst, the subject of Orson Welles' film Citizen Kane. Under the baton of Music Director Giancarlo Guerrero, the Nashville Symphony is joined by Zuill Bailey, one of the leading cellists of his generation, and organist Paul Jacobs.

João de Sousa Carvalho was one of the foremost Portuguese composers of his generation. L'Angelica was his first opportunity to write a 'courtly serenata or drama', the first of ten such works, after being appointed music master to the Portuguese royal family at the court of Queen Maria I (1734-1816). Setting a libretto by the great Italian poet Metastasio, Carvalho brings out every ounce of dramatic intensity in his richly expressive and captivating score, the story of how the beautiful and intelligent Angelica uses and misuses her seductive charms to fool the noble Orlando into thinking she loves him, only to abandon him and run away with Medoro instead.

The long-awaited final disc in the Sibelius cycle from Minnesota Orchestra and Osmo Vänskä

The first disc in the Sibelius cycle from Osmo Vänskä and Minnesota Orchestra made the reviewer in Gramophone speculate about a 'benchmark cycle for the 21st century' whilst the second instalment received a Grammy for 'Best Orchestral Performance'. The long-awaited final disc in the cycle, with a playing time of 82 minutes, combines the Finnish master's third symphony, completed in 1907, with his two final works in the genre, composed more or less in tandem between 1922 and 1924. Symphony No. 3 in C major is Sibelius's most classical symphony, a radical change in direction after the opulence of its predecessor. It has been claimed that the mastery of form in its first movement is comparable only to the greatest Viennese masters - and at the same time the conductor Koussevitzky, one of the composer's strongest champions, spoke of it as 'music far in advance of its time'. Fifteen years later, and after the heroic Fifth Symphony, Sibelius again presented a symphony which surprised those admirers who expected more of the same. Sibelius gave Symphony No. 6 a refined modal flavouring, avoiding both virtuoso orchestral writing and massive climaxes, and likened it to an offering of 'pure spring water'. This he followed up immediately with what would become his symphonic swan song - the stern and majestic Seventh Symphony. A one-movement work, it was at first billed as 'Fantasia sinfonica' but it is indeed a true symphony, its single movement portraying elements of all four movements of symphonic practice.

Grigory Sokolov has gained an almost mythical status amongst music-lovers and pianophiles throughout the world. He is considered by many today to be the world's greatest living pianist. Ever since his first recital in Leningrad. He has amazed everyone again and again with the enormous breadth of his repertoire and his huge, almost physical musical strength. Grigory Sokolov was largely unknown in the West, however, until the late 1980's, but is now rightfully regarded as a giant of the piano. Sokolov's concerts are anticipated with eagerness where ever he travels. He's not been outside of Europe for several years now, preferring to tour Europe. His programmes change twice a year, Sokolov mining the music he plays for every jewel before he feels ready to consider a new work. Sokolov prefers his CD's to be recorded live is not surprising, since he likes to capture the sacred moments of a real, live concert and avoid the sterile atmosphere of a studio. Ludwig van Beethoven's Piano Sonata No. 29 in B-flat major, Op. 106 (known as the Große Sonate für das Hammerklavier, or more simply as the Hammerklavier) is a piano sonata widely viewed as one of the most important works of the composer's third period and among the greatest piano sonatas. Completed in 1818, it is often considered to be Beethoven's most technically challenging piano composition and one of the most demanding solo works in the classical piano repertoire.
