Known as a piano teacher, with whose works almost every piano pupil should be familiar and possibly also as a pupil of Beethoven, Carl Czerny enjoys practically no fame as a composer today. The composing maniac (round about 800 published works) acquired a great reputation (and wealth) from piano teaching and writing educational works for the piano and compositions the market expected from him and from which he earned a lot of money. At the moment, seven quartets are recorded, four of which were probably intended for publication. Czerny composed in the tradition of Haydn and Beethoven. Echoes of Mendelssohn can be discerned as well as a romantic style full of drama and profundity of expression. The quartets have only been passed down as manuscripts from Czerny's estate, which can be found in the archives of the Society of Friends of Music in Vienna.

Debussy's music reveals characteristics that justifiably move it into the proximity of Impressionist painting, as it produces moving paintings, landscapes of sound, and soundscapes in the narrowest sense of the word that can draw the listener into the middle of the picture.

Maurice Ravel's String Quartet, completed in 1903, had to be and was compared with Debussy's quartet. At the same time, it can be seen here how Ravel's musical diction - based on Debussy's - prepared the way for French Modernism.

Like only a few of his colleagues, the Briton Thomas Adès, born in 1971, is capable of fusing traditional elements from music history, including obvious references to existing compositions, with modern sound production, into an individual style appealing directly to the listener.

The album includes Brahms' Clarinet Quintet, one of the most seminal works for the instrument - combined with Hungarian dances and waltzes by Brahms, all newly arranged to include additional material from Brahms' original musical sources, with an authentic folk twist.

Brahms is seen as one of the most serious composers of the German school - this bold venture reveals how closely connected his music actually is to the vibrant folk music inspired Hungarian music world. Andreas Ottensamer, himself half-Hungarian, naturally recognizes Brahms' Clarinet Quintet as “genuinely one of the monuments of the entire clarinet repertoire, a piece that every clarinettist dreams of playing”.

The stunning ensemble of musicians includes violinist Leonidas Kavakos, Antoine Tamestit (viola), Christoph and Stephan Koncz (violin, cello), Ödon Rácz (double bass), Predrag Tomic (accordion) and cimbalom virtuoso Oskar Ökrös.

Sonya Yoncheva is one of today's fastest rising young opera stars. The young Bulgarian soprano first gained international prominence when she took first prize in the 2010 edition of Plácido Domingo's prestigious Operalia competition at the Teatro alla Scala in Milan. She has collaborated with many artists from the world of opera, and also cross genres: with names from the rock and pop world such as Sting and Elvis Costello, as well as with outstanding classical musicians like Plácido Domingo and Jonas Kaufmann. 'Paris, mon amour' was recorded in one of Europe's most prestigious concert halls - the Palau de la Música in Valencia, under the baton of renowned conductor Frédéric Chaslin. This debut album concentrates on a particularly appealing period, the 'Belle Époque' 1871 to 1914. of cultural life. The 'Belle Époque' eminently suits Sonya, who communicates both elegance and panache onstage, both in her distinctive, multicolored voice and her irresistible personality. Forthcoming residency at the Royal Opera House London in 'Verdi 'La Traviata' - Violetta'. 'OPERA' magazines 'Record Of The Month' for May. The Guardian quotes 'Sonya Yoncheva is surely a star in the making'.

Carl Czerny is remembered as a pupil and friend of Beethoven and the composer of numerous piano studies, but in his lifetime he was renowned for a prodigious output of brilliant concert works, most of which remain entirely unknown to present-day audiences and performers. Inspired by the most famous and attractive themes from Bel Canto operas which were hugely popular in their time and are still performed today, these sets of variations give full rein to the soloist and are a major contribution to the great pianist-composer tradition.

Brought up in the Roman Catholic faith, which he abandoned in 1917 following the death of his father, Poulenc returned to the Church in 1936 after the death of his close friend and fellow composer Pierre-Octave Ferroud. Together these events caused a spiritual crisis in Poulenc's life which led to a series of important compositions for chorus. The powerful Mass in G major, dedicated to the memory of his father, is notable for its daring use of tonality, though the playfulness of Poulenc's 'Les Six' period is not absent. In the Sept Chansons, set to surrealist texts, and in the two sets of Motets - both very personal and penitential - Poulenc generates a huge range of emotion.

In this latest installment of recordings focusing on the choral traditions of different country's choral music traditions launched last year by the Vokalensemble Stuttgart des SWR, we now arrive in sunny Italy, a country said to have no native choral tradition.

Giuseppe Verdi of course used choirs in his operas, but apart from that there are only a few choral works that have sustained any place in the repertoire, some of the finest of which are presented here. With the beginning of the 20th century, however, one encounters composer's that are less well known, but whom have certainly composed some very exciting music for choir, including Pizzetti, Giacinto Scelsi, Luigi Nono and Goffredo Petrassi.

They all offer poignant, poetic, funny, mysterious, ironic choral works that are original and always interesting in their structure. They show an Italy away from the operatic bel canto, but certainly not lacking in beautiful melodies. This is a most worthy addition to their on-going “country” series.

The Vokalensemble Stuttgart des SWR is one of the most internationally acclaimed choirs. Their scholarship, adventurous programming, wide range of styles and impeccable vocal performances are their trademarks. For many years, the Vokalensemble has been considered one of the top ensembles for contemporary music and has, throughout its 65 year history, presented more world premieres than any other professional choir.

Following her recent well-received Michael Nyman recording Chasing Pianos, Valentina now turns her attention to the Romantic Era and the Études of Chopin and Schumann.

Chopin's Études were the first to be seen as true piano works rather than merely studies. Quickly becoming a regular part of the concert repertoire, these are some of the most challenging and evocative works for piano.

Schumann's Symphonic Etudes, believed to be some of the most difficult music for the piano are also featured on this release, including five additional movements restored by Brahms in 1890 after Schumann's death.

No other artist on a major label has offered this exciting combination, totalling 85 minutes of music on one CD.

Contralto & conductor Nathalie Stutzmann is an exciting new signing, having left Deutsche Grammophon/Universal to join the Erato roster. Considered to be one of the most outstanding musical personalities of our time, she has parallel careers as both a contralto and an orchestra conductor. She sings regularly with the world's greatest conductors and orchestras, including the Berliner Philharmoniker under Sir Simon Rattle, Vienna Philharmonic, Orchestre de Paris, the LSO and Rotterdam Philharmonic under Yannick Nézet-Séguin. She currently is in residence with the São Paulo Symphony Orchestra (OSESP).

In 2009, Nathalie Stutzmann founded her own chamber orchestra, Orfeo 55, playing on both baroque and modern instruments, with which she tours extensively and partners her on this new release. The orchestras' repertoire reflects the breadth of Nathalie's own, performing not only music from the Baroque period, but also works by composers in the 20th century such as Richard Strauss and Arnold Schoenberg. This album focuses on Handel's contralto arias, wonderful music from some of his best-loved operas, but rarely heard independently of full performances. With this release Nathalie Stutzmann gives light to these heroes usually in the shadows, giving these characters and this wonderful music a new perspective - making them the stars of this album.
