Adriana Lecouvreur, although a melodramatic fictional tale, is based on a real-life actress of the ComÉdie-FranÇaise, and is the only one of Cilea's operas to have held a place in the repertory, albeit on the fringes. The opera is tuneful and melodic with some arias that are also occasionally heard in recital but its main challenge is for a dramatic soprano and this is amply demonstrated here by Renata Scotto.

This third disc in Naxos's Martucci Edition, comprising the complete orchestral works, continues with the First Piano Concerto which, while indebted to Chopin and Mendelssohn and prefiguring Rachmaninov, nonetheless has its own expressive immediacy.

By turns sensuous and serene, nostalgic and intensely yearning, The Song of Remembrance is a rare example of a song cycle for voice and orchestra composed in nineteenth-century Italy.

Volumes 1 and 2 of the Naxos Martucci Edition are available on 8570929 and 8570930.

2009 marks the centenary of the death of Giuseppe Martucci.

“In recent years it has been an enormous thrill hearing my music being performed by The Dmitri Ensemble. This excellent, young ensemble brings a breath of fresh air to music making in this country, and are fortunate to have in their director Graham Ross one of the most exciting new musicians to appear on the radar.” James MacMillan

Naxos is delighted to mark James Macmillan's 50th birthday with this disc on Naxos, bringing together a number of different choral works from 1993 to 2005.

This disc contains two world première recordings and is produced by John Rutter , who spoke of the Dmitri Ensemble in the following terms : “They are the stars of the future.”

Max Bruch (1838-1920) was born in Cologne and is remembered mostly for his first Violin Concerto with an extremely beautiful slow movement written in 1868 and his Scottish Fantasy, also for Violin and orchestra, dating from 1880 is increasing in popularity. His music, whilst it has echoes of Mendelssohn and Schumann, foreshadows Bruckner and the late German Romantics. It is therefore most useful to have a collection of his three symphonies to help us assess of the development of the Symphony in the later half of the nineteenth century. The first dates from the same year as the famous Violin Concerto and was dedicated to Brahms who was Bruch's elder by five years, the second from four years later. The last had its premiere in 1882 in New York whilst the composer was nearing the end of an unhappy three years as music director of the Liverpool Philharmonic Society. The set is completed by recordings making their first appearance on CD, firstly the Concerto for two pianos which it is believed to date from 1911 (it does not appear in the list of works as part of the article in the New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians published in 1980) and secondly two sets of piano works dating from when Bruch was in his early twenties.

The fourteen works for piano and orchestra of Ferdinand Ries stand alongside those of Hummel as among the most important of their kind from the early decades of the 19th century.

Intensely lyrical and yet displaying at times a rugged Beethovenian grandeur, Ries's concertos are works of impressive musical stature.

The three works featured on this recording are all associated with Ries's English period: the Abschieds-Concert von England, composed to mark his retirement from the London stage; the brilliant Grand Variations on 'Rule Britannia', composed at Hastings in 1817, and the enchanting Introduction et Variations Brillantes, Op. 170 which takes as its theme Soldier, soldier, will you marry me?

Catrin Finch, former Harpist to the Prince of Wales, has become one of her instrument's foremost exponents. In bringing the harp to new audiences through performances and TV appearances, her energy and enthusiasm (as well as virtuosity and dedication to her instrument) has been endless. A recent appearance on BBC4, where she presented a definitive history of the instrument, confirmed her status as a star personality, as well as a star performer.

On this, her Deutsche Grammophon debut, Catrin tackles brand new arrangements of JS Bach's Goldberg Variations, for solo harp. The clear sound of the harp brings this intricate and beautiful music to life in a delicate and unique fashion. Catrin plays throughout the UK during 2009 and will also undertake extensive promotion around the release of this album.

Leopold Stokowski arranged nearly 40 works from Bach's catalogue for the modern symphony orchestra, and José Serebrier's second volume of Bach-Stokowski Transcriptions is as colourful and wide-ranging as the first (8557883).

In response to popular and critical demand the present selection begins with the most famous Bach orchestration of all, the celebrated Toccata and Fugue in D minor. This reached its widest public in Walt Disney's Fantasia and here introduces a programme of sumptuous arrangements, including other music from the pre- and post- baroque periods.

While children's voices have been heard in church music for centuries, music specifically composed for young choristers is a relatively recent, and most welcome, development.

As the attractive and diverse music by the fourteen composers represented on this delightful recording shows, children's choirs now have a wealth of outstanding repertoire to delight, challenge and initiate them into the world of music.

The Grammy award-winning New London Children's Choir, founded by Ron Corp in 1991, has been described by the Financial Times as “excellent” and by The Independent as “terrific.”

They have performed in the UK, Europe and North America to critical acclaim and boast an impressive discography, including two recordings of music by Britten for Naxos (8553183 and 8557203).

Minnesota Orchestra, Osmo Vänskä

Awards:
Gramophone Awards 2009 Finalist - Orchestral
Gramophone Magazine January 2009 Editor's Choice

Beethoven's Symphonies Nos. 2 and 7 make up the fifth and final instalment of the Symphony Cycle with conductor Osmo Vänskä and Minnesota Orchestra; a cycle which has received universal praise.

The first instalment in Osmo Vänskä's and Minnesota Orchestra's Beethoven cycle was released in December 2004 and was immediately praised for the performances as well as for the state-of-the-art sound. The following discs have if anything strengthened the case for this cycle. With such forerunners it is not surprising that the present disc, closing the cycle, has been eagerly awaited.

The disc opens with Symphony No. 2, completed in 1802 during one of the darkest periods of the composer's life, as he was struggling to reconcile himself with his encroaching deafness. Under the circumstances, as Beethoven specialist Barry Cooper points out in his liner notes, a striking feature of the work is 'its thoroughly optimistic character throughout - it is almost as if he was using the symphony as a means of escape.' Following it is the Seventh Symphony in which the strong rhythmic drive that pervades all four movements has made it a favourite in the concert hall - among its admirers is found Richard Wagner who famously dubbed it 'the apotheosis of the dance'.

'Vänskä's Beethoven looks set to be a front-runner among the historically unprejudiced cycles now available.' International Record Review
