During his years in Salzburg, Mozart wrote a series of shorter mass settings, for which he drew on the models of his senior colleague Michael Haydn. Regina coeli reveals his supreme skill at writing for the solo voice. The Missa brevis in D, K. 194 is a work of great solemnity, employing a remarkable range of expressive contrasts, whilst the Missa brevis in B flat, K. 275 is notable for its sublime lyricism and grace. The Allegro and Andante in F minor, K. 608 is regarded as Mozart's finest work for the organ and has become one of the cornerstones of the organ repertory.

The church music Mozart wrote in Salzburg is both ingenious and expressive, and has wide appeal. Our disc expands the choral focus.

Elizabeth Cragg (soprano), Deborah Miles-Johnson (contralto), Daniel Auchincloss (tenor) & Lawrence White (bass), Tom Winpenny (organ)

Renowned worldwide in his lifetime and remembered today as a double bass virtuoso, Giovanni Bottesini excelled in every branch of musicianship, but his operas and sacred works were overshadowed by those of Verdi and have fallen into neglect. Composed in response to the death of his brother Luigi, Bottesini's large scale Requiem combines ecclesiastical counterpoint with formal innovation and the expressive lyricism and dramatic orchestration of operatic models.

With double bass virtuoso Thomas Martin stepping into conductor's shoes in Bottesini's unjustly neglected Requiem, this is one of our major releases of the season, which will be sure to generate wide interest. With an extremely strong set of soloists, The Joyful Company of Singers' “conviction and a real depth of feeling” (Gramophone on 8557783, Williamson Choral Music), and the renowned London Philharmonic Orchestra, this is a large-scale work to stand alongside Verdi's famous Requiem, but by contrast having the CD market entirely to itself.

The fourteen works for piano and orchestra of Ferdinand Ries stand alongside those of Hummel as the finest and most important of their kind from the early decades of the 19th century. Intensely lyrical and yet displaying at times a rugged Beethovenian grandeur, Ries's eight concertos are works of impressive musical stature. In this fifth and final recording we encounter the first and last of his published concertos and the virtuosic Rondeau brillant, Op. 144. “Sparkling performances… the recording is first rate.” (Penguin Guide on Vol. 3, 8570440).

Drawing on the romantic spirit in music, Schubert's moving setting is of a poem by Goethe which compares a rushing waterfall to the soul of man, while Strauss's gorgeous Mittagsruhe depicts the peace of a summer noontide. Narrative vocal traditions are heard in Sibelius's nationalist Vapautettu kuningatar, Bruckner's heroic Helgoland, and Grieg's Landkjenning, which tells of the 10th century Norwegian king Oleg Tryggvason. Das Liebesmahl der Apostel anticipates the religious ecstasies of Wagner's Parsifal, while Debussy's early cantata Invocation resonates with Gallic sparkle.

Written in 1944, Prokofiev's Fifth Symphony is one of his greatest and most complete symphonic statements. At its première he himself called it “a symphony of the grandeur of the human spirit”. The first movement couples considerable strength with unexpected yet highly characteristic twists of melody. After a violent scherzo followed by a slow movement of sustained lyricism, with a fiercely dramatic middle section, the finale blazes with barely suppressed passion. The Year 1941 is another wartime work, a symphonic suite written in response to the German invasion of the Soviet Union. This is the first volume of a complete cycle of the Prokofiev Symphonies with the OSESP and Marin Alsop, the orchestra's newly appointed Principal Conductor.

No other pianist is as closely connected with the music of Franz Liszts as Georges Cziffra. The Hungarian-French virtuoso, who died in 1994, was one of the best Liszt interpreters of all time. His recording of the composer's two piano concertos together with other pieces for piano and orchestra are among the highlights of his discography.

From folk music to film music, the violin is the star of instruments. Millions of children all over the world learn how to play it and the top performers make it sound beautiful. They can also do clever things on it, with their fingers whizzing up and down, and the bow moving so fast you can hardly see it. Take the music of Mr Paganini on track 1 - he really knew how to show off. Here is the violin in the spotlight: listen to it sing!
