The new album from Yo-Yo Ma and the Silk Road Ensemble will surprise and delight with imaginative sounds that transform the traditional musical landscape. SING ME HOME is the sixth album by the Grammy®-nominated Silk Road Ensemble and its founding member and guiding light, Yo-Yo Ma.

The album features special guest performers Rhiannon Giddens, Sarah Jarosz, Abagail Washburn, Gregory Porter, Lisa Fischer, Grammy Award®-winning jazz guitarist, Bill Frisell, and more.

Produced by Silk Road Ensemble member Johnny Gandelsman and Grammy Award® winner Kevin Killen (U2, Kate Bush, Elvis Costello, David Bowie), SING ME HOME examines the ever-changing idea of home, with original and traditional tunes composed or arranged by members of the Ensemble's unique collective of global artists. Each piece invites listeners to explore the “music of home” through the individual experiences of Ensemble members, many of whom are immigrants. The result is a compelling collection of innovative and deeply moving tributes to the rich cultural heritage of the Balkans, China, Galicia, India, Iran, Ireland, Japan, Mali people of Roma, Syria and the United States.

SING ME HOME was developed and recorded alongside The Music of Strangers: Yo-Yo Ma & the Silk Road Ensemble, a documentary feature film from Oscar® and Emmy®-winning director Morgan Neville that tells the story of the Ensemble and Silk Road, its parent organization. The documentary had its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival on September 13 2015.

Yo-Yo Ma's Silk Road Project has been on a mission to promote innovation and cross-cultural understanding through the arts for the last fifteen years; the latest chapter comes with the release of their new album, A Playlist Without Borders. The vision of Yo-Yo Ma's limitless collective is as timely as ever: to connect the world's neighborhoods by bringing together artists and audiences. From flashy surf guitar sounds to ninth century Chinese poetry, from modular playlists to Egyptian rhythms, the Silk Road Ensemble mixes the modern and the traditional, breaking boundaries of ethnicity and era. A Playlist Without Borders demonstrates that there are no barriers for those approaching music with an open mind.

Founded by Yo-Yo Ma, the Silk Road Ensemble has featured more than sixty members from twenty-four countries and has been described as “a kind of roving musical laboratory without walls” by the Boston Globe and hailed as “one of the 21st century's great ensembles” by the Vancouver Sun.

The most-talked about artist of the 2015 Tchaikovsky Competition created huge excitement and world-wide media attention with his riveting background and “genius-like playing” (Boris Berezovksy). Debargue, who is 25, started the piano late at 11 years old, learning mostly in isolation. After dropping the instrument for three years to play in a rock band and study literature, he started formal piano training aged 20. Placed 4th, he was described by media as “the real winner” of the competition and received the Music Critics' Association award as “the pianist whose incredible gift, artistic vision and creative freedom have impressed the critics as well as the audience.” Valery Gergiev, the competition's chairman, broke protocol by letting Debargue play in the winners' gala and not prizewinner Dmitry Masleev. Lucas Debargue's debut album is a live recording at the Salle Cortot in Paris and documents his first concert in his hometown after the competition. The centrepiece of his first recording is Ravel's monumentally challenging Gaspard de la nuit. One of the most difficult piano pieces in the repertoire, which Debargue performed to sensational acclaim during the second round of the competition. “It's a great spiritual work. It's like a Goya painting, filled with light and darkness.” The recording also includes four coruscating sonatas by Domenico Scarlatti; Chopin's emotionally intense Ballade No. 4; Liszt's devilish Mephisto Waltz; and smaller works by Grieg (Lyric Pieces op. 47 no. 3, “Melody”) and Schubert (Moment musical op. 94 no. 3). Debargue says, “I chose the repertoire to go from early Scarlatti to Ravel, with a wonderful romantic bridge of Chopin and Liszt to go between them'.

Grigory Sokolov (piano)
Münchner Philharmoniker, Witold Rowicki

For the first time on CD, this rare recording of Chopin's piano concerto is one of Grigory Sokolov's only productions in a concerto role, accompanied by an orchestra. This original Eurodisc session recording with Münchner Philharmoniker has been newly remastered from the original tapes. Grigory Sokolov is regarded as one of the world's leading pianists, dedicated to his art, and adored by his audience in sold-out concerts. Few pianists of recent years have become quite such a legend in their own lifetime. Sokolov created a huge worldwide fanbase solely by playing concerts, as he refused do studio recordings. The only recordings available are live recording of concerts. Recording: Bürgerbräu Munich November 1977. Production: Oskar Waldeck, Hans Richard Stracke. Recording Engineer: Horst Lindner. Inspired by a journey to Tchaikovsky's hometown Saint Petersburg, Jan rediscovered some of his favorite pieces from the composer.

The famous Rococo Variations were written by Tchaikovsky for the cellist Wilhelm Fitzhagen who added some minor edits to make the work more playable. Jan recorded a new combination of the original with Fitzenhagen's version.

Sérénade mélancolique and Souvenir d'un lieu cher are both originally works for violin and orchestra. For this recording, Jan arranged the cello parts himself and teamed up with the Frankfurt Radio Symphony under their new Music Director Andrés Orozco-Estrada.

The vivacious “Souvenir de Florence” is Tchaikovsky's only string sextet. Jan recorded this piece with musicians of the Moritzburg Festival, an excellent chamber music festival located in the Moritzburg castle near Dresden.

Jan Vogler's distinguished career has seen him perform with renowned conductors and internationally acclaimed orchestras around the world. His strong classical foundation has allowed him to push the boundaries of his sound, creating an ongoing dialogue with contemporary composers and performers.

Khatia Buniatishvili's new recording Kaleidoscope, a unique combination of masterful and challenging pieces, shows her true virtuosic playing and features the well-loved Pictures at an Exhibition by Modest Mussorgsky, Ravel's La Valse and Stravinsky's Petruschka.

Given that these pieces all have an orchestral version, the pianist must bring out this larger palette of colours on a single instrument. Khatia does just that, painting her own picture of the pieces, how they are interwoven and the special characters she wants to emphasize.

There is a strong sense of character about the programme - it is music to be seen as well as heard, and it takes in other art forms as well: dance, puppetry and painting. The movement and colours of these other art forms are encapsulated in Khatia's playing and the album's title, Kaleidoscope.

Twice Grammy-nominated AMY DICKSON made history by becoming the first saxophonist and the first Australian to win the 2013 MasterCard Breakthrough Artist of the Year Classic Brit Award. Recognised widely for her remarkable and distinctive tone and exceptional musicality, she has performed throughout the world in prestigious venues such as the Wigmore Hall, the Royal Albert Hall and the Sydney Opera House, and as a soloist with orchestras including the Philharmonia Orchestra, Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, London Philharmonic Orchestra, Ulster Orchestra, Sydney Symphony Orchestra, Melbourne Symphony Orchestra and the Vienna Chamber Orchestra. Peter Sculthorpe's 'Island Songs' contains some of the most beguilingly lyrical music written by the foremost Australian composer of his generation, whose death in August 2014 was lamented throughout the world. Ross Edwards' 'Full Moon Dances' is made up of five seamless movements, creating a kaleidoscope of sound featuring fragments of birdsong, plainsong, drones and Indigenous chants from around the world. These sounds are brought together around the central figure of the solo saxophonist. 'The Siduri Dances', by composer, conductor and violist Brett Dean, celebrates another female figure: 'a wise female divinity from the Epic of Gilgamesh'. 'Island Songs and The Siduri Dances were recorded in the Eugene Goossens Hall, ABC Ultimo, with conductor Benjamin Northey and ARIA-Award-winning producer-engineer Virginia Read; Full Moon Dances was recorded live in the Concert Hall of the Sydney Opera House with Miguel Harth-Bedoya on the podium.

Berliner Barock Solisten, Reinhard Goebel

Very few ensembles specializing in early music can display a level of artistic mastery akin to that of the Berliner Barock Solisten. Founded in 1995 by Rainer Kussmaul and other prominent members of the prestigious Berliner Philharmoniker, the musicians and their director (as first among equals) have created a unique approach to performing works of the 17th and 18th centuries. The “Berlin Baroque Soloists” not only do justice to their name (each musician is a master soloist), they also play on historic, though modernized, instruments, using bows from various periods, depending on the work being performed. This flexibility, along with the homogeneity with which the ensemble plays and the presence of leading soloists from the “early music scene” within its ranks, is virtually unparalleled internationally. With historical discernment, the old is treated to a fresh hearing, to fresh thinking. The result is a modern interpretation, but without “modernization”. This brand new album recorded in the Philharmonie Berlin's 'Große Saal' is the second in the series of C.P.E. Bach albums from the Berliner Barock Solisten, and presents two of the composer's symphonies and two concertos. Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach was the fifth child and second (surviving) son of the famous Johann Sebastian Bach. C. P. E. Bach was an influential composer in his own right, working at a time of transition between his father's baroque style and the classical and romantic styles that followed it. His personal approach, an expressive and often turbulent one known as empfindsamer Stil or 'sensitive style', and his music has an abiding quality so untypical of the 18th century in that it is “good, original and shockingly modern. [Reinhard Goebel - Berliner Barock Solisten]”.

Cellist Yo-Yo Ma and pianist Kathryn Stott create a unique classical music experience with their new Sony Classical recording Songs from the Arc of Life available September 18, 2015. This all-new recording also celebrates thirty years of friendship and collaboration in concerts and recordings for Ma and Stott. The album includes pieces they have frequently performed but never recorded, as well as a handful of discoveries. Songs from the Arc of Life begins and ends with two, much-beloved settings of the traditional “Ave Maria,” opening with the soaring, radiant Bach/Gounod arrangement and closing with Schubert's more serene, contemplative version. In between is a remarkable spectrum of music that includes such enduring favorites as Brahms' “Lullaby,” Dvořák's “Songs My Mother Taught Me,” Elgar's “Salut d'amour,” Gade's “Jalousie” and Saint-Saëns' “The Swan,” as well as richly evocative works by Debussy, Delius, Fauré, Gershwin, Grieg, Kriesler, Messaien, Schumann, Sibelius and Tchaikovsky. Ma and Stott also include a haunting piece by the contemporary composer Giovanni Sollima, a friend and colleague of both artists.

This release unites on record for the first time America's reigning star soprano Renée Fleming and its premier string quartet, The Emersons, to take us on a journey into the twilight world of Vienna in the 1920s and 30s in music imbued with late romanticism and burgeoning modernism.

Berg's Lyric Suite is a work of intricate, complexity believed to have a secret dedication and to outline a secret programme relating to Berg's affair with Franz Werfel's sister (Werfel was married to Mahler's widow, Alma). Theodor Adorno called the work a “latent opera” and in its sixth and final movement, the Largo desolato, Berg introduces the soprano voice and quotes Wagner's Tristan motif to evoke his doomed, impossible love.

This was still secessionist Vienna: a world of paintings by Klimt, psychoanalysis by Freud and a musical life where you could hear Bruno Walter conduct Mahler and Clemens Krauss lead the operas of Richard Strauss.

Egon Wellesz's highly expressive setting of Sonnets by Elizabeth Barrett-Browning was one of the last works he completed before leaving Austria ahead of the Anschluss in 1938. It is heard here in its original version for soprano and string quartet. Barrett-Browning was one of the most popular English poets of the Victoria era, although Wellesz turned to German translations by Rainer Maria Rilke for his setting.

Renée Fleming is famed for her “intense and luxurious” (Evening Standard) performances of Richard Strauss and Korngold, Berg and Mahler. Her sumptuous sound is uniquely suited to this repertoire.

As Edward Seckerson wrote of her fin de siècle recital at the Barbican in 2012: “We were back in Vienna's golden age and it seemed like that was where she had always belonged”.

In this fifth and last episode of the “transfigured” series, Petronel Malan dedicates herself, following Bach, Beethoven, Tchaikovsky and Mozart to the works of Johannes Brahms. Once again the South African born and by choice New Yorker convinces with an extraordinary program full of interesting works. Composers such as Lowell Liebermann, Ludwig Stark or Ignaz Friedman put Brahms's four-handed chorales, tunes and works into a piano solo made mode. The world premiere of Brahms's Haydn variations Op 56a, originally composed for the orchestra, which has been modified by Ludwig Stark, completes this diversified portrait of a composer. Petronel Malan belongs without a doubt to one of the well-respected pianists of her age, which is impressively proven by the variety of many international awards, she has won.

Known as a piano teacher, with whose works almost every piano pupil should be familiar and possibly also as a pupil of Beethoven, Carl Czerny enjoys practically no fame as a composer today. The composing maniac (round about 800 published works) acquired a great reputation (and wealth) from piano teaching and writing educational works for the piano and compositions the market expected from him and from which he earned a lot of money. At the moment, seven quartets are recorded, four of which were probably intended for publication. Czerny composed in the tradition of Haydn and Beethoven. Echoes of Mendelssohn can be discerned as well as a romantic style full of drama and profundity of expression. The quartets have only been passed down as manuscripts from Czerny's estate, which can be found in the archives of the Society of Friends of Music in Vienna.
