Aspects of education law provides a comprehensive description and analysis of the laws that currently inform, prescribe and influence the activities of educators and education managers, whether on the sports fields or in the boardroom, at the blackboard or behind a desk.

This fifth edition of Aspects of education law places emphasis on the legal aspects that pertain to learner misconduct in South African schools, with extended chapters on human rights and school governance, and has been thoroughly updated in terms of new legislation and case law. It includes discussions of the position of the child as legal subject, the educator's duty of care and the administrative aspects of school management.

Aspects of education law has become an essential resource for educators, lawyers, members of governing boards and parents, and all of those who are interested in ensuring high-quality schooling in South Africa. Previous editions have been hailed as being 'among the highest in the international community' and 'a must for ... scholars throughout the world with an interest in comparative education law' by American academics.

[A] superb blend of theory and practice ... [and] ... a comprehensive compilation of all of the relevant statutes, regulations, and law cases that apply to education. Both education and law practitioners will find the case studies ... to be invaluable in assisting them to recognize, respond to, and resolve legal issues in schools. This book should become a standard work in training education practitioners and should be on the shelf of every education and legal professional in South Africa.

The South African curriculum has experienced many changes since 1994. There was outcomes-based education (also known as Curriculum 2005), then the Revised National Curriculum Statements, followed by the National Curriculum Statements (NCS). In January 2012, Curriculum and Assessment Policy Statements (CAPS) were introduced to replace the NCS. All these changes have been confusing to the average teacher, with the assessment of the young learner being particularly challenging. Assessment in the Foundation Phase guides teachers and student teachers towards understanding assessment as a means for ensuring that learners have attained the necessary outcomes, and doing it effectively for optimal teaching and learning.

Assessment in the Foundation Phase sets out recommended techniques and tools to assess learners' knowledge, skills, attitudes and values, and applies these to all subjects prescribed by CAPS. Its goal is to inspire teachers to prepare learners to meet the challenges of future learning through quality assessment and in so doing, support learners in gaining the capacity for lifelong learning. A chapter on e-assessment introduces a useful perspective on this burgeoning field.

Assessment in the Foundation Phase is aimed at teachers and student teachers.

Reda Davin was a senior lecturer and programme manager in BEd (ECD), PGCE (ECD) and Foundation Phase progammes for 31 years. She holds a DEd degree and MDiac in play therapy and is the Head of Department: Foundation Phase Teacher Training at AROS in Pretoria. She is the editor and co-author of four books on early childhood teaching.

Mariana Naude is a lecturer in mathematics for undergraduate student teachers (Foundation Phase) at Aros in Pretoria She is the co-editor of various text books published by Van Schaik Publishers, including Teaching Foundation Phase mathematics: a guide for South African students and teachers and Teaching life skills in the Foundation Phase.

All students are required to write assignments. Despite this, there seem to be few books available that provide concise guidelines as to how to compile them. Those that are available are often outdated and complicated, and do not illustrate well how the information, once gathered, should be integrated and implemented. Assignment writing uses practical examples to show clearly how to approach and write an assignment. Contents include the following: The process of assessing, planning, writing, editing and handing in an assignment; Technical requirements, such as the use of scientific language, abbreviations, tables and figures, as well as neatness and binding; Referencing techniques and the compilation of a list of sources; Formatting the document, from cover to cover. Assignment writing is aimed at all students needing to produce assignments to the standard required by tertiary institutions.

In haar `transformasie-trilogie' bestaande uit Country of My Skull (1998), A Change of Tongue (2003) en Begging to be Black (2009) artikuleer Antjie Krog haar kritiek op en weerstand teen bepaalde opvattings van Westerse moderniteit.

Basic mathematics for economics students - Theory and applications
Economic theories can be expressed in words, numbers, graphs and symbols. The existing traditional economics textbooks cover all four methods, but the general focus is often more on writing about the theory and methods, with few practical examples.
With an increasing number of universities having introduced mathematical economics at undergraduate level, Basic mathematics
for economics students aims to fill this gap in the field.

Basic mathematics for economics students begins with a comprehensive chapter on basic mathematical concepts and methods (suitable for self-study, revision or tutorial purposes) to ensure that students have the necessary foundation. The book is written in an accessible style and is extremely practical. Numerous mathematical economics examples and exercises are provided as well as fully worked solutions using numbers, graphs and symbols.

Contents include the following:
• Linear and non-linear mathematics
• Keynesian model of the economy
• Differential calculus
• Matrices
• Basic mathematics of finance
• Partial differential calculus
• Integral calculus
• Linear programming

Basic mathematics for economics students is aimed at all economics students. It focuses on quantitative aspects and especially complements the three highly popular theoretical economics textbooks, Understanding microeconomics, Understanding macroe- conomics and Economics for South African students, all written by Philip Mohr and published by Van Schaik Publishers.

Do you need to be popular to make money from social media? No! There are, however, a few important lessons verified influencers (those with the blue ticks and paying clients) have learnt through trial and error. As traditional media keeps losing eyeballs and revenue to digital and indeed social media, this content revolution presents unprecedented opportunities for those who know how to make the most of their interests and smartphones. In 2019, Elma Smit was hand-picked by two global governing bodies as the face of their World Cup content campaigns, in the space of only six months. Yet, she generated more revenue from influencer work in that same period than from anything else. In Become an Influencer, one of South Africa's leading content creators and influencers spills the beans on how to build a loyal audience, how to charge for paid campaigns and how to avoid running into a social media meltdown. Maps Maponyane, Rachel Kolisi, Nadia Jaftha and Liesl Laurie and a whole host of other leading influencers also reveal their influencer secrets, tips and hard-won lessons to Elma, while leading strategists who select influencers for global and local campaigns share what they look for in an influencer.

Every learner and every teacher is a unique blend of personal characteristics and background factors that change with time and context, and affect the experience of living and developing. Traditionally, the education of children with disabilities focused on the nature of specific conditions in an attempt to alleviate barriers to learning. The disability, and not the impact of the impairment on participation at school or at home, was emphasised. The current focus is on the strengths, attitudes and positive functioning of children within meaningful contexts. Believe that all can achieve addresses inclusion as the foundation for education in an attempt to celebrate diversity in the classroom, to capitalise on the strengths each learner brings to the learning-teaching dyad, and to welcome every family member as part of the broader classroom community.

Believe that all can achieve embraces the core values of the South African Constitution - freedom, dignity and equality. It shares best practice, evidence-based techniques and strategies in an effort to build a deeper understanding of the core issues. Narratives, case studies, screening checklists, engaging illustrations and examples enable the teacher to translate theory into actuality in the classroom. The chapters on challenging behaviours; intellectual, learning, physical and sensory disabilities; autistic spectrum disorders, and medical conditions add a wealth of information and a ready reference.

Believe that all can achieve is aimed at students and teachers in the field of inclusive education.

Seeing children with disabilities at work has taught me that there are many things they do that I thought they could not do. From this experience I now know that I would have no problem employing a person who is mentally or physically challenged. I ask God to help all of us have a better understanding and to see them as normal. I also ask that inclusion becomes part of many schools because I truly believe we can all benefit from inclusion.

A mother of a typically developing child in an inclusive school. Everything must be done in the best interests of the child. Bill of Rights, 1996

This book reveals a long-lost treasure trove of silent cinema. At the same time as Hollywood was starting, a film industry in Southern Africa was surging ahead in production, distribution and exhibition.

Films made in African studios and locations brought in experienced technicians and actors from New York and London, as well as employing many Africans - whose talents were remarked upon in overseas reviews.

Nearly sixty movies are reconstructed with illustrations, plot synopses and quotations from reviews - including the precursor of the 1960s movie Zulu, the original King Solomon's Mines and The Blue Lagoon, with pioneer African film stars A.Z. Goba and Msoga Mwana as the black revolutionary in Prester John.

Neil Parsons was professor of history at the University of Botswana and has taught and researched at universities in Zambia, Swaziland, South Africa, the UK, the USA, Canada, Australia and the Netherlands. He is the author of King Khama, Emperor Joe and the Great White Queen, and, with Alois Mlambo, A History of Southern Africa.

'A history which has long needed to be told. It throws new light on developments in film production during the Great War period and immediately after.'
Kevin Brownlow

'A splendid addition to the burgeoning literature on colonial cinema and Black world cultural studies.'
Nwachukwu Frank Ukadike

'Neil Parsons's reputation as a sharp-eyed analyst of Central and Southern Africa is based on his enviable knack of finding neglected topics and then fashioning them into works that simply light up cultural history everywhere.'
