Next time you go to a conference or hire a consultant to be told, 'We live in a VUCA [Volatile, Uncertain, Complex, Ambiguous] world,' leave the room. You are wasting your time. In a world of fake news, deep-fakes, manipulated feeds of information and divisive social-media agendas, it's easy to believe that our time is the most challenging in human history.
It's just not true.
It is a time of extraordinary opportunity. But only if you have the right mindset. Fear of the future breeds inaction and leads to strategic paralysis. We put off decisions until we can have certainty. We look for signals. We wait. And while we do that, the world moves on around us. Problem solvers thrive in chaotic and uncertain times because they act to change their future. Winners recognise that in a world of growing uncertainty, you need to resort to actions on things you can control.

And the only things over which you have absolute control are your attitude and your mindset. These, in turn, determine the actions you will take and that will define your future.
A robust mindset is the one common characteristic Bruce Whitfield has identified in two decades of interrogating how South Africa's billionaires and start-up mavericks think differently. They are not naive Polly-Annas. They don't ignore risk or hope that problems will go away. They constantly measure, manage, consider and weigh up opportunities in a tumultuous sea of uncertainty and find ways around obstacles.
If, as Nobel Prize-winning economist Robert Shiller suggests, the stories we tell affect economic outcomes, then we need to tell different stories amidst the noise and haste of a rapidly evolving world.

Voices from the Underground takes the reader inside the ANC's military underground in the mid- to late 1980s, during the height of the apartheid regime's violent crackdown on political activism. In this book, eighteen members of Umkhonto we Sizwe's Ashley Kriel Detachment, which operated primarily in the Western Cape, tell their stories for the first time.
From smuggling arms across the Botswana border to setting off a limpet mine inside the Castle of Good Hope, participants in the armed struggle speak about the operations they carried out, the tactics they employed, the victories they achieved and the hardships they endured, including the deaths of comrades at the hands of the police and the immense burden of living a double life.

This collection of memoirs sets out the various journeys undertaken by each member of the detachment on the road to becoming a soldier of the revolution, and reveals the reasons why these ordinary people took the extraordinary step of dedicating their lives to fighting for freedom no matter the cost.

The SS Mendi is a wreck site off the Isle of Wight under the protection of Historic England. Nearly 650 men, mostly from the South African Native Labour Corps (SANLC), lost their lives in February 1917 following a collision in fog as they travelled to serve as labourers on the Western Front, in one of the largest single losses of life during the conflict.

The loss of the SS Mendi occupies a special place in South African military history. Prevented from being trained as fighting troops by their own government, the men of the SANLC hoped that their contribution to the war effort would lead to greater civil rights and economic opportunities in the new white-ruled nation of South Africa after the war. These hopes proved unfounded, and the SS Mendi became a focus of black resistance before and during the apartheid era in South Africa.

One hundred years on, the wreck of the SS Mendi is a physical symbol of black South Africans' long fight for social and political justice and equality and is one of a very select group of historic shipwrecks from which contemporary political and social meaning can be drawn, and whose loss has rippled forward in time to influence later events; a loss that is now an important part of the story of a new 'rainbow nation'.

The wreck of the SS Mendi is now recognised as one of England's most important First World War heritage assets and the wreck site is listed under the Protection of Military Remains Act. New archaeological investigation has provided real and direct information about the wreck for the first time.

The loss of the Mendi is used to highlight the story of the SANLC and other labour corps as well as the wider treatment of British imperial subjects in wartime.

John Gribble is an experienced diver who has explored the SS Mendi site and runs his own marine archaeology consultancy.

Graham Scott is an archaeologist for Wessex Archaeology.

A unique lens through which to analyse the demise of the National Party: written by a woman and using class analysis - the two decisive “missing links” in Afrikaner history- writing. - Antjie Krog

In 2006, almost a hundred years after the founding of the National Party, the unthinkable happened: the once mighty party of apartheid collapsed into the African National Congress, its sworn enemy for almost a century.

While a string of blunders saw party support plummet-ing, such a humiliating end was wholly unexpected. Is it true that the NP's leaders had betrayed their supporters? What role did the NP play during the negotiations to ensure increased wealth among the black and white South African elite? And is greater material welfare enough to keep Afrikaners satisfied, or are we seeing a resurgence of Afrikaner nationalism? These and other issues are addressed in White Power & the Rise and Fall of the National Party. Vast in scope and details, this book provides an overview of South African politics and society from 1900 to the present. It covers debates on apartheid abuses, the 'leaders' betrayal' and collaboration with the ANC. It will be of interest to all readers wanting to understand South African politics during the democratic transition, whether they previously supported or opposed the NP.

'The freezing loneliness made one wish for death,' Joyce Sikhakhane-Rankin said of solitary confinement. With seven other women, including Winnie Madikizela-Mandela, she was held for more than a year. This is the story of these heroic women, their refusal to testify in the 'Trial of 22' in 1969, detention and how they picked up their lives.
