Rhodes's name was known the world over. Some regarded him with admiration, some with loathing, but none with indifference.
A major study which uses a multitude of archive and other little-known materials to recreate the tumultuous atmosphere of the time and to highlight key philosophical and moral issues...

De Wet is in 1854 in 'n hartbeeshuisie gebore.

Charles Abrahams is a world-class lawyer who sued multinationals for colluding with the apartheid government, but at twelve he was determined to become a world-famous heartsurgeon. Then a school inspector shattered his dream: coloured children from the Cape Flats 'should not aim too high'. Class Action is the story of how Charles aimed high anyway, despite a childhood that included forced removal, dire poverty and the deep sense of shame of being neither white nor a 'white coloured'. As one of eleven children in a poor family, he experienced constant hardship and family strife.
Violence was ubiquitous: his street was notorious for its gang fights, his father abused his mother at home, and schoolteachers beat darker-skinned children like him. Charles wanted a larger life, and he found it through student politics, anti-apartheid activism and reading. He studied relentlessly, finding not only formidable political weapons, but a means to delve into the damage apartheid had done to his personal identity, selfesteem, sexuality and morality. He went on to qualify as a lawyer and, after defending local gangsters, he sought to do good through human-rights and class-action law. He has since spearheaded some of South Africa's most historic, groundbreaking lawsuits, pursuing justice for ordinary citizens whose lives were ruined by powers too profit-driven to ever think about them.

Class Action depicts a remarkable journey of resistance and healing in reaction to institutionalised greed and racism and the harm it has done to our identities, our relationships and the people of our country.

In 1899 Deneys Reitz, then aged seventeen, son of the Chief Justice (later President) FW Reitz of the Orange Free State, enlisted in the Boer army to fight the British. He had learnt to ride, shoot and swim almost as soon as he could walk.

1929. Deneys Reitz, who is now one of General Smuts's political lieutenants and a warm supporter of the British Commonwealth, fought through the South African War as our enemy. He enlisted on the outbreak of the war as a boy of seventeen and went through it to the bitter end. His father was President of the Orange Free State, and after peace was concluded he and his family went into exile. Later he returned to his own country; and later still fought in the Great War on the side of the Allies, first in West and South Africa, and then in France, where he was severely wounded, and where he came to command the First Battalion of the Royal Scots Fusiliers.
Commando abounds in interesting sidelights and portraits - Kruger, De Wet, Smuts, Kitchener. One of the most remarkable passages gives us a glimpse of the young Winston Churchill as prisoner of war in Pretoria. It is difficult to speak of this book in anything short of a string of superlatives.

The spirit of it is magnificent; the uncomplaining courage of the boy-fighter rouses memories of all the stories down the ages about unrecking devotion to an ideal. And not one of them is a finer one than this.

The deaths of many thousands of people, especially women and children, in the concentration camps of the Anglo Boer War form one of South Africa's national tragedies. This is the first general history of the camps in over fifty years, and the first to use in depth the very rich and extensive official documents in South African and British archives.

South Africa remains the most unequal country in the world, with a Gini coefficient of 0.63 in 2015. In terms of wealth, the top percentile households hold 70.9% while the bottom 60% holds a mere 7%. 76% of South Africans face an imminent threat of falling below the poverty line. These statistics explain the continued presence of violent protest in the country and a general sense that the legacies of apartheid and colonialism have not been overcome. In this context, the Institute for African Alternatives has brought together a series of papers written by eminent South African academics and policymakers to serve as a catalyst to finally confront and resolve inequality.

The development of reliable contraception is widely regarded as one of the great achievements in the broad field of medicine in the 20th century, particularly with the explosion in the global human population being a major cause of poverty and environmental destruction, and a real threat to our planet. Modern contraceptives are very effective and medically extremely safe - the challenge is to suggest and constantly supply the most appropriate ones. Contraception: a South African perspective is a comprehensive textbook on fertility control and the prevention of pregnancy, especially with regards to women's health and wellbeing. In order to ensure its relevance not only in South Africa but also in the sub-Saharan African region, Contraception: a South African perspective includes a chapter with up-to-date information on natural and traditional contraception. The need to prevent the transmission of HIV and other sexually transmitted infections receives special attention throughout, and the contraceptive needs of women with HIV infection are addressed, including those on antiretroviral therapy. Contents include the following: Reproductive physiology; Oral and injectable hormonal contraception; Intrauterine contraception; Male contraception; Sterilisation (male and female); Termination of pregnancy. Contraception: a South African perspective is aimed at a wide audience of medical and nursing students, medical practitioners and other health care workers and volunteers. Planners and funders of essential and basic medical care will potentially benefit from the scientific content and the insights of the authors.

In an overpopulated world, an alarming number of approximately 230 000 humans are born daily. Africa makes a significant contribution to this gloomy situation. Millions will be doomed to famine unless the frightening birth rate is curbed. For this reason, contraception must be a priority in medical training, research and planning, act well as funding of health services. Contraception: theory and practice is essentially targeted at the health professions, including doctors, students, pharmacists and nurses - especially in family planning clinics. However, anyone seeking information on contraception will also benefit from it. This textbook has been an established reference for many years.

In the late 1970s, as the apartheid government fought a desperate and dirty battle to stay in power, its security forces devised a chilling new tactic. A shadowy, top-secret unit called Delta 40 was established, tasked with the murder of hundreds of ANC, PAC, and SWAPO members. Victims' bodies were flung from aircraft into the Atlantic Ocean. Based on the detailed analysis of flight logs and numerous interviews, Death Flight sheds shocking new light on one of apartheid's darkest chapters.

In Namibia the 1980s were a dark decade of human rights abuses by South African security forces. Judge David Smuts, then a young Windhoek lawyer, felt compelled to take on the system. His gripping memoir details several dramatic cases, including the freeing of detainees that had been held secretly for six years, proving that torture was used to extract 'confessions' and that Koevoet knowingly killed civilians. Working with the likes of Sydney Kentridge, Geoff Budlender and Arthur Chaskalson, Smuts won legal victories and established a legal centre in the far North, where many misdeeds had taken place. Smuts also takes a fresh look at the assassination of Anton Lubowski, anti-apartheid activist and his close friend.
